We’re often asked which accommodation we recommend when visiting Gorongosa.
And honestly, it’s one of our favourite questions because there isn’t really a single answer.

Muzimu Lodge and Chicari Camp offer very different experiences of the park, but together the full experience of this story comes to life.

Set along the Mussicadzi River, Muzimu Lodge is surrounded by forested landscapes. It’s a place to settle into the landscape, with days spent exploring the park, learning more about its conservation work, and returning to camp to spend time by the river or around the fire.

At Chicari Camp, the experience is centred around the natural pan. The setting is more open, and wildlife often becomes part of camp life itself, with herds, birds and other animals moving through the landscape around you.

One gives you a sense of Gorongosa through its rivers, forests and mountains. The other opens out onto the floodplains and the wildlife that moves across them.

And that’s why, if you have the time, we really do recommend experiencing both.
Our Stay 5, Pay 4 offer allows you to spend five nights between the two camps, while Stay 7, Pay 5 gives you seven nights to settle into both and experience even more of what Gorongosa has to offer.

Sometimes the best way to answer the question of where to stay is simply: stay longer.

Named after the renowned biologist Edward O. Wilson, the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Laboratory is one of the places where Gorongosa's conservation story comes to life behind the scenes.

The laboratory supports research by scientists from universities around the world, while also helping train young Mozambican scientists.

It is a place for asking questions about Gorongosa.

How is the ecosystem changing? What can we learn from the species living here? And what can that knowledge tell us about protecting the park in the years ahead?

For guests interested in the science behind the restoration of Gorongosa, visits to the laboratory offer a glimpse into a very different side of the park.

When we talk about conservation in Gorongosa, we often talk about the wildlife or the landscape.

Today, we want to focus on what may be the most important part of all - the people who will carry this story forward.

The story of Gorongosa has always extended far beyond the boundaries of the park itself. It lives in the communities that surround it, in the classrooms, homes and villages that are just as much a part of this landscape as the forests and floodplains.

Programmes like Girls Club invest in young women through mentorship, education and leadership opportunities, helping them build confidence, develop new skills and see possibilities for their futures that may once have felt out of reach.

Because lasting conservation isn't only about protecting wildlife. It's about investing in people too.

This International Youth Day, we celebrate the young women who are already helping shape the future of Gorongosa.

There was a time when elephants in Gorongosa were almost lost.

Before the Mozambican Civil War, thousands moved across these floodplains and forests. During the conflict, many were killed for ivory to fund both sides of the war, and by the early 1990s only a small fraction of the population remained.

Their return has not happened overnight.

It has taken decades of protection, restoration and patience for elephant numbers to begin recovering once again.

Today, seeing herds move across the floodplains is more than a safari moment. It is a reminder of what is possible when ecosystems are given the opportunity to heal.

On World Elephant Day, we celebrate not only the elephants of Gorongosa, but the story of resilience they have come to represent.
