🐘 Elephant Fact Wednesday 🐘

Did you know? Desert-adapted elephants are not a separate species of elephant – they are African elephants that have developed remarkable adaptations to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

These incredible giants can travel up to 70 km in a single day in search of food and water, using ancient routes passed down through generations. Their larger feet help them walk more efficiently on soft river sand, while their ability to go several days without drinking makes them perfectly suited to Namibia’s arid landscapes.

Here in the Ugab River, we’re privileged to share our wilderness with these extraordinary animals – a true symbol of resilience, wisdom, and survival.

🐘 Elephant Fact Wednesday: Why Do Elephants Flap Their Ears?

Did you know?

An elephant’s ears aren’t just for hearing—they’re nature’s air conditioners.

The large network of blood vessels inside an elephant’s ears helps regulate its body temperature. By flapping their ears, elephants can cool the blood flowing through them and lower their overall body temperature by several degrees.

In the harsh Namib Desert, where temperatures can soar, this natural cooling system is essential for survival.

Just another example of how perfectly adapted these incredible animals are to life in one of the world’s toughest environments.
