🚗 𝗣𝗶𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 | 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗲 𝗞𝗮𝗹𝗸ö𝗳𝗲𝗻 🚗 When a road trip takes you across the wide-open spaces of southern Namibia, getting there is part of the adventure.

And sometimes it’s the little places you discover along the way that add something special to the journey - somewhere to stretch your legs, enjoy a good coffee or pick up a last-minute snack or treat before arriving at Alte Kalköfen... or for the road after saying goodbye.
Here are a few of Hilde & Frikkie’s suggested stops:
📍 Naute Kristall – Near Naute Dam, this is a lovely place to break your journey for coffee, cake or a light lunch. Be sure to try their signature date-and-chocolate cake, made with dates grown right there on the farm. They also distil their own gin on the premises, making it a unique local stop to discover.
📍 Canyon Farmyard – A relaxed stop with a genuine Namibian farm atmosphere.
📍 Canyon Roadhouse – A wonderfully quirky southern Namibia road-trip stop, filled with old vehicles, character and plenty of nostalgia.
📍 Biltongplaas – Travelling between Alte Kalköfen and Lüderitz? Stop along the B4 for some biltong, droëwors and other homemade treats for the road.

✨ Because on a Namibian road trip, it’s not only about where you’re going - the little stops along the way are part of the experience too.

💍 𝗦𝗮𝘆 “𝗜 𝗱𝗼” 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁 💍There is something truly special about saying your vows beneath the beautiful African skies, surrounded by the people you love most and a landscape you will never forget.

At Alte Kalköfen Lodge, we offer a truly special setting for small, intimate weddings where the Namibian desert becomes part of your celebration.
Graham and Christine Pearson’s beautiful wedding was one of those unforgettable occasions. Their ceremony and celebrations were set amongst the dunes, with the wide-open desert creating a spectacular natural backdrop.

And celebrate they did! 🥂 There was laughter, plenty of fun and even a bit of choreographed dancing, and afterwards everyone joined in dancing together.
As the celebrations drew to a close, the desert gave the newlyweds one final gift - a beautiful Namibian sunset, with Graham and Christine walking off together beneath the glowing evening sky. ❤️

🌸 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆! 🌸Although the spring equinox is only later in September, 1 September is traditionally celebrated as Spring Day in Southern Africa - a day that marks the promise of warmer days, new growth and a new season ahead.

At Alte Kalköfen Lodge, spring has its own special way of making itself known. In a landscape often described as dry and rugged, the smallest splash of colour can feel extraordinary. Delicate flowers appear across the farm, reminding us just how much life is hidden within the Namibian desert.

From tiny blossoms between the stones to unexpected bursts of colour against the dry earth, each flower is a little celebration of the resilience and beauty of nature. 🌼

These ten photographs were all taken here on the farm - ten beautiful reminders that sometimes the smallest things bring the greatest joy.

☀️𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐮𝐧. The same Namibian sun that paints the desert in breathtaking colours each day also quietly powers your stay at Alte Kalköfen Lodge.

Our bungalows are equipped with solar geysers, and throughout the day the lodge runs on the abundant solar energy that the desert so generously provides. As the sun shines, it also charges our battery bank, allowing us to continue using stored solar energy long after the sun has set. Meals are prepared on gas, making thoughtful use of alternative energy sources wherever possible.

For our campers, simplicity is part of the experience. Each campsite has its own private ablution block with solar lighting, a shower, basin, toilet and outdoor washing trough, while hot water is heated the traditional way with a donkey boiler. With no electricity at the campsites, guests can truly disconnect and enjoy an authentic desert camping experience.

To ensure your comfort at all times, Alte Kalköfen also has a backup generator, guaranteeing reliable power 24 hours a day whenever it's needed. Although our battery bank provides solar power well into the evening, the generator is available whenever additional power is required.

For us, sustainability isn't about sacrificing comfort - it's about making wise use of one of nature's greatest gifts while preserving the beauty of the landscape we call home.

Every sunrise brings more than another beautiful day at Alte Kalköfen - it brings the energy that powers your desert adventure.
