I have confession

Holiday makers & Swakopmund do go
together like Kartoffelpuffer & Apfelmus.
One can even go as far as to say that
Swakop would not survive without them.

[holidays makers….not Kartoffelpuffer.]

But, come peak seasons when our town
is packed to the brim with bustling people
and cars with non-coastal number plates,
I do find myself feeling a little…frustrated.
Especially with some not appreciating our
uber-efficient one-way street systems.

The absurdity of my periodic frustration
has never been more apparent than now.
It is with longing that I await their return.
I even miss not being able to find parking.

For now, I cannot change circumstances.
So, to all future holiday makers, I choose
to be fully grateful and appreciate all the
rejuvenating beauty that we get to enjoy
living here in Swakopmund daily,
and promise to uncompromisingly share
this amazing place once you visit again.

It is with new-found meaning that I say,
Hotel Europa Hof is truly
YOUR home at the coast.

Uncharted Waters

These are turbulent times we are in.
Navigating a yet unknown coastline,
with no map nor compass it seems.
Heavy rains atop of crashing waves.

But our collective history is filled with
stories of adversity & new discovery.

Let us find some solace in the fact
that we cannot control the storm,
only our actions in this moment
and that we are no less strong
than those from our history books.

So, let us not resent or fear the storm.
Only get through it as best we all can.
Together.

Because together, even a shipwreck
can still feel like a home at the coast.

As we again enter full lockdown,
it becomes difficult to be hopeful.

But when traversing big coastal storms,
a captain keeps his sight fixed on the light.
Knowing that the entire ships well-being
relies on him not losing his true bearing.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
May you not lose sight of Your true light.

An enjoyable day at the beach.

Looking at the photograph of Langstrand in 1904,
one can imagine everybody’s optimistic outlook.
No-one foreseeing what lay ahead a decade later.
Possibly much like ourselves only a decade ago.

In a way this image offers some hope to us all.
Society has overcome many challenges before,
as we will also overcome the hardships of today.

Although how we enjoy the beach may change,
we will all certainly do so with optimism again…
it is just a matter of time.

Records indicate that the location of Europa Hof
was used as guest accommodation since the 1900s.
Although undergoing many changes over time,
we believe, that Bismarck str 39 will always remain,

“Your home at the coast.”
