Mornings in Swakopmund often arrive cloaked in gray, with not a trace of sun in sight. But wait a little longer. The mist doesn’t linger passively; it shifts like a tide. At first, it drapes over the streets, muffling sound and softening edges, then slowly retreats toward the horizon until it resembles a pale mountain rising from nothing.

On the road, the air bends light in uncanny ways. A fata morgana stretches ahead, making cars appear to hover, their reflections shimmering like pools of water that vanish as you draw near.

I’ve lived in Swakopmund for many years, yet this sight never feels ordinary. It isn’t dramatic, but it is strangely mesmerizing — the kind of everyday spectacle that makes you pause, reminding you how the coast toys with light and air.

Just as the fata morgana tricks the eye, life too can distort our sense of reality. What seems unreachable or uncertain often dissolves as we move closer.

Have you ever noticed how uncertainty, like fog, can soften the world and make you see it differently?

Tourists robbed at gunpoint while bird-watching at Swakop

Adam Hartman

Four Canadian tourists were robbed at gunpoint on Friday (24 October) while bird-watching near the salt pans, north of Swakopmund.
According to the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch, the incident occurred around noon. Four armed suspects confronted them, forcing them to hand over all their belongings, including mobile phones, cameras, binoculars, passports, purses, and backpacks. The attackers slashed a tyre of the rental vehicle before fleeing in a small black hatchback towards Swakopmund.
The attackers dropped a phone, which enabled the traumatised victims to call for help. They were found by the neighbourhood watch and security serviced.
A case of armed robbery was opened at the the Swakopmund Police Station.
The community is urged to help locate three missing Canadian passports belonging to Moira Anne Beauchesne, Suzanne Beauchesne, and John Morton Cooper. A reward is being offered for their recovery.
“Crimes against tourists seriously damage Swakopmund’s reputation as the 'Centre of Adventure',” the neighbourhood watch warned, calling on residents to “join hands and show these tourists that tourism is everyone’s business.”
