The Story Beneath the Story

There is a story beneath the story you tell the world.

It is quieter, less polished, and far more honest. Most people spend years circling it, sensing it, but never quite giving it the space it needs to emerge.
We become skilled at telling the version that fits. The version that makes sense. The version that keeps life moving smoothly. But beneath that, there is something deeper waiting to be acknowledged.

Creative Flow is not about learning how to write better. It is about learning how to listen more deeply. When the nervous system softens and the mind stops performing, something else begins to move. Words arrive not from effort, but from truth.

This is the real shift. You stop trying to say something meaningful… and instead allow meaning to reveal itself.

In the stillness of the African wilderness, guided by Annemarie Luck and Joe van Niekerk, this becomes a lived experience. You begin to notice that creativity is not something you manufacture. It is something you allow.

And when you allow it, you do not just write differently.
You begin to live differently.

There are moments in life when something finds you… and you don’t fully understand why.

It doesn’t arrive with certainty or clear answers. It comes more quietly than that, as a feeling, a pause, a subtle shift inside you that says, there is something here for me.

Maybe that’s what this is. Not something to analyse. Not something to overthink. But something to feel into.

Because Under The African Sky is not simply a retreat. It is a journey into consciousness, one that gently brings you back to yourself through breath, nature, and something far more powerful than information:
Story.

There is a reason story has carried wisdom for thousands of years. The mind can resist information, but it cannot resist truth when it is felt. A real story doesn’t just inspire you, it softens you, disarms you, and reveals something you may not have been ready to see.

Brett Shuttleworth often shares that it wasn’t the Guru’s wisdom that changed his life, but the way the story was told, so clearly that what was seen could no longer be unseen.

And that is what this experience is about.

Not becoming someone new. Not adding more to your life. But beginning to see clearly what has always been there.

While many travellers assume this time of year is not ideal for safari, here in the Zambezi it is quite the opposite.

With permanent water, lush floodplains, and abundant grazing, wildlife is thriving. Large herds of elephant move along ancient migratory routes, buffalo gather in impressive numbers, and predators follow closely behind. Birdlife is at its most vibrant, and the entire landscape feels alive.
At our lodges within Bwabwata National Park, guests are experiencing an incredible diversity of wildlife; in a setting that is green, dramatic, and full of life.

This is a different kind of safari.
Quieter. Richer. Unexpected.

From the Wild, Into the Workplace

At African Monarch Journeys, transformation has always been at the core of what we create. Not just exceptional experiences, but spaces where people reconnect, reset and return with clarity.

Through Retreats in the Wild, we’ve seen what happens when individuals step out of the noise and into environments that allow real alignment to take place.

And over time, one thing became clear:
The transformation that happens in these spaces…
is not only needed in retreat.

It is needed in the workplace where leaders are navigating pressure, complexity, and constant demand.

The Ultimate Breakthrough Experience is the natural evolution of this work.

An extension of the African Monarch Journeys philosophy,
bringing conscious leadership, alignment and embodied performance into corporate environments.

Brought to you by Brett Shuttleworth and Joe van Niekerk, this experience bridges the gap between how people perform and how they show up.

Because sustainable performance doesn’t come from pressure alone, it comes from alignment.

This is not a departure from what we do. It is a continuation of what we’ve always believed.

That when people shift…
performance follows.

If this resonates with where your organisation is heading, we’d love to explore what this could look like for you.

DM us to start the conversation.

There are moments in life when you begin to realise that what is holding you back is not a lack of ideas, but something deeper that has never been given the space to move.

Creative Retreat: Uncover Your Story is a Retreats In The Wild experience, a 5-night Writing & Yoga retreat set in the raw, untouched beauty of Nambwa Tented Lodge | Namibia, created for those who feel there is something within them waiting to be expressed, but have not yet found the space, the stillness, or the right environment to access it.

Guided by writer and Kundalini yoga teacher Annemarie Luck, together with Joe van Niekerk, this retreat is not about forcing creativity or trying to “figure it out,” but rather about gently removing what stands in the way of your natural expression.
A powerful part of this journey is conscious connected breathwork, a practice Joe will guide throughout the retreat. Through the breath, the body begins to soften and open, allowing emotions that have been held - sometimes for years - to move and release. As this happens, something shifts.

The internal noise quietens, the pressure to perform falls away, and a deeper sense of presence begins to emerge.

From this place, creativity no longer needs to be pushed. It arises naturally, honestly, and with a depth that cannot be accessed through effort alone. You stop asking yourself what you should write, and instead begin to feel what is ready to be expressed.

Held in the stillness of the wild, where elephants move beneath your suite and nature sets the rhythm of your days, this experience becomes more than just a retreat. It becomes a return to your body, to your truth, and to your voice.

From waste to wonder. From discarded to designed.

At the heart of the Sijwa Project in the Zambezi Region, transformation is more than a process, it’s a purpose.

What was once thrown away, glass bottles, beer cans, cool drink tins, is reborn through fire, skill, and vision.
Cans are compressed, melted, and carefully poured into moulds, becoming handcrafted aluminium pieces.
Glass is broken, reshaped by heat, and turned into delicate beads that carry stories of resilience and creativity.

This is not just recycling.
This is empowerment.
This is community.

Every piece created here supports livelihoods, nurtures talent, and proves that beauty can rise from what we often overlook.

Come and experience the magic for yourself.
Come and see how we turn waste into something meaningful.

Today, we honour a life that was deeply woven into the heart of The Sijwa Project and African Monarch Journeys.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Allen Makutela, who was taken from us far too soon.

Allen was there at the very beginning of The Sijwa Project. The glass recycling workshop that stands today, and the beauty it brings into the world, is largely because of him. His dedication, his craftsmanship, and the quiet pride he carried in his work shaped not only what we create, but who we are.

He was a leader, a teacher and a steady presence here at Sijwa. He led with gentleness, with patience, and with a quiet strength that earned the respect of everyone around him.

Allen was not just part of African Monarch Journeys and The Sijwa Project. He was part of our family.

We grieve his loss deeply. We hold his family and friends close in our hearts during this time.

“ I cannot imagine stepping back into Sijwa without Allen’s beautiful smile. He shared the glass recycling experience with so many of our guests, always with such gentleness and expertise. From the young man I employed in 2020, he grew from strength to strength, becoming an extraordinary part of all that The Sijwa Project is today.” Tinolla Rodgers

May his soul rest in peace. His legacy will live on in every piece created, and in every life he touched. 🕊️

Looking for a top-flight birding destination?
The permanent river systems, seasonal floodplains and vast woodland ecosystems of Namibia’s Zambezi region attract over 450 recorded species. Shot in Bwabwata National Park, at the heart of the world’s largest transfrontier conservation area, the birds pictured here are just a tiny fraction of all that feathered biodiversity. So pack your camera and sense of awe.

On boat cruises, game drives and guided bush walks you’ll listen for the haunting cry of the African Fish Eagle, watch for flashes of the Lilac-breasted Roller’s bright plumage and try to spot the Hamerkop’s enormous, domed nests. Although these nests are sturdy enough to support a human, you’ll probably prefer our luxury lodges or authentic campsite.
