The President of the Bank Consumers Association of Nigeria, Dr Uju Ogunbunka, made the appeal in an interview with DAILY POST on Wednesday.

DAILY POST reported on Tuesday that Zenith Bank, in a notice, confirmed that hackers had gained unauthorized access to customers' data.

Reacting to the development, Ogunbunka said the incident was not something bank customers should treat with kid gloves.

According to him, customers should immediately carry out due diligence on their accounts to ensure that their deposits remain intact.

“Now, what bank customers should naturally do is to log into the bank’s system and check what is happening.

“If I were involved, let’s say I have an account with Zenith Bank and I received that information, I would call my account officer, you understand, and try to get an update.

“Cross-check your account to know if your deposit is intact. You can also visit the bank and ask them to provide your account balance so that you have an idea whether your own portion of the system was compromised.

“Check your account. You will know where you stopped before and where you are now, and see whether there has been any intervention, interruption or encumbrance on the account,” he told DAILY POST.

He further urged Nigerian banks to fortify their systems against cyber threats and attacks to prevent a recurrence.

Ugandans are mourning the death at 27 of one of the country's best-known footballers after he was beaten by suspected robbers near his home in the capital, Kampala.

Police said David Owori was fatally assaulted after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings, prompting an outpouring of grief and renewed public anger over violent crime in Uganda.

Owori captained Sports Club (SC) Villa, the Uganda Premier League record champions, where he played both as a right-back and midfielder. He also represented the country's national team - the Cranes.

"We have lost more than a player - we have lost a leader, brother and friend," SC Villa said in a statement.

Witnesses said a group of attackers hit the footballer with paving stones on Tuesday night before robbing Owori of his belongings and fleeing, leaving him unconscious.

SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye told journalists that Owori was targeted just outside his home in Makindye, a Kampala suburb.

"The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility," Kasingye said.

Owori was rushed to a nearby medical clinic and then transferred to a private facility in the city, but he died of his injuries on Wednesday.

Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said detectives were pursuing leads to identify those responsible.

"The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved," Kawala added.

Owori's murder has sent shockwaves across Uganda, with the football community, including fans and teammates, and politicians demanding justice.

Tributes are continuing to pour in for the defender, who was popularly known as Colgate.

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) described Owori as "a true leader on and off the pitch".

"David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation," it said in a statement.

The national side, the Cranes, said the team had lost a football star who "carried the hopes" of Uganda.

Parliament on Wednesday observed a minute's silence in honour of Owori and called for a quick investigation.

The versatile player, renowned for his tactical discipline and ability to feature across midfield, returned to SC Villa in 2023 - after two years in Spain for a second spell - becoming one of the club's longest-serving players.

He helped lead the high-profile team to their first league title in 20 years securing a record 17th top-flight crown in 2024.

His influence on and off the pitch earned him a contract extension until January 2027 with the team.

Owori also featured in the national team during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and was regarded as a strong contender for future call-ups to the Cranes.

His death has triggered anger on social media, with many Ugandans questioning the level of violent crime in Kampala and calling for tougher action against criminals.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the submissions of the Archbishop Emeritus, Catholic Diocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, against the administration of President Bola Tinubu as mere politics.

According to him, it is clear where the political loyalty of Cardinal Onaiyekan lies, and it is not surprising to see him speak against the Tinubu government.

Naija News reports that Wike spoke on Tuesday during his chat with journalists while reacting to the exchange of words between the clergyman and the presidency over Tinubu’s performance in office.

Onaiyekan had said many people around President Tinubu are giving him the wrong impression about the economic situation in Nigeria.

Recounting the meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) with Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, Onaiyekan said the President rejected the bishops’ concerns about the reality in the country.

The cleric said the President’s response was not positive, stressing that he was not surprised by Tinubu’s disagreement.

According to him, many people around Tinubu are presenting rosy views of the country, adding that their duty is to present the truth to the President, despite the frosty reception.

However, the presidency rejected his position, describing the clergyman as more political than spiritual.

In his own reaction on Tuesday, Wike said a religious leader should not be seen to be taking political sides, adding that everyone knows who Onaiyekan supports and his words are not surprising.

The Minister argued that he is not against making comments on government activities, but such comments must be objective.

“If a religious leader is perceived or seen to be taking a side and it’s very clear, it becomes difficult for people to see those comments as helpful or real.

“I’m aware of Cardinal Onaiyekan’s position. It’s not hidden who he supports. Everybody knows that.

“In 2023, religious leaders took sides. It was very open,” Wike declared.
