CARMEN IS A GUESTHOUSE, KITCHEN AND SHOP. A home where you can stay, shop, eat or just relax.

An Alternative to a traditional hotel or Airbnb, we wanted to create a space that feels like a home first but with the comforts of a hotel.

Borrowed Time, our first show in the house. Viewings by appointment through the end of October (link in bio), or DM us for the price list.

“When I became pregnant, I stopped painting.” Kita stopped for a physical reason: her process meant laying the canvas flat on the floor, and her changing body could no longer work that way. When she came back to painting, motherhood had changed how she worked. It had to be faster and more immediate, each painting finished before the next responsibility called.

That is where the title comes from. Every hour in the studio is borrowed from somewhere else: from her daughter, from family, from work that might pay more. She takes those hours anyway. She keeps returning to the same photographs from 2020, finding a new route through them each time. She never throws a painting away; she keeps working until the first mark she made has found its place.

Thirty works in oil bar on paper, made with urgency and with patience, hung in rooms built for conversation and creativity. Intimate, personal, and close to home in every sense. The first of what we hope will be many more art shows in the house.

A big thank you to everyone who worked on this with us:ward

Opening on 24 September at CARMEN, Kita Rancaño Ward presents Borrowed Time, a series of works exploring the ephemerality of light and time.

The birth of her daughter, Simone, marks an evolution, a refinement of the creative process. Although her perception of time has shifted, the source material remains the same. Each form drawing from a personal photographic archive, a collection of light, darkness and shadows.

The works are an expression of what’s possible. The improbability of making alongside all of the things that can, and do take place while others sleep, in the moments between meals, appl
ications and work.

The artwork is a reflection of that borrowed time. They’re unlaboured, and rendered in oil bar, a departure from her stretched works. The act of surrendering to a new rhythm ultimately leading to an altered process, one rooted in clarity and freedom.

Opening: RSVP via [email protected]
Viewing by appointment, 25–28 September, book via link in bio.

“Best of everything to me. Kinda between a cookie and a scone with a jam-filled middle. They have a nutty savory bite because dough is made with walnuts and polenta. But then with the sweet jam in the middle thinks it’s a yummy bite.” Tedi CARMEN KITCHEN
