In this process, Marcel Wanders defies design dogma, preferring instead to focus on holistic solutions rather than the technocratic. In this universe, the coldness of industrialism is replaced instead by the poetry, fantasy and romance of different ages, vividly brought to life in the contemporary moment. www.marcelwanders.com

Some materials have a character that can't be manufactured, only understood and brought to life. At the heart of Ancient Memories lies h**p, joined by jute, wool and other fibres to create textiles rich in texture, depth and natural variation. Rough surfaces meet softer finishes, while woven structures recall the marks of earth, bark and ancient stone.

In pieces such as Puffy Loom, Animalia Echo and Sacred Bark, Marcel Wanders gives these references a contemporary presence. The result celebrates the beauty of imperfection, allowing every knot, weave and irregularity to become part of the design. Here, craftsmanship gives the past a new purpose and materials earn their place in the future.

As the days grow shorter and the world outside turns colder, Marcel Wanders invites us to find warmth in the stories woven into our surroundings. Ancient Memories, created for Fischbacher 1819 in collaboration with textile artist Caterina Roppo, gives new life to the wisdom of materials and the beauty of things shaped by time. Rooted in nature and ancient craft, the collection celebrates natural components and fibres, including h**p, jute and wool, bringing their distinctive character into contemporary interiors. Their honest textures and organic qualities give each design a sense of depth, connecting us to the world beyond our walls.

From curtains and cushions to rugs and other decorative textiles, Ancient Memories offers a rich variety of pieces to shape the atmosphere of a home. Each one carries traces of nature, traditional craftsmanship and the stories that materials hold within them. For Marcel Wanders, true luxury lies in creating objects that speak to our senses and stir our emotions. Because a home should hold more than beautiful things; it should hold memories waiting to be made.

Some relationships in design are measured in years, others in the trust and shared curiosity that make those years matter. Marcel Wanders returned to BULB, the Prague showroom that has represented Moooi for 23 years, almost since the brand began. The gathering brought together members of the design community to celebrate Marcel’s recent recognition at DesignBlok and reflect on this longstanding relationship. The conversation looked back at the founding of Moooi, its defining milestones and the collaborations that have shaped its identity. Marcel also shared reflections on his own creative evolution and the ideas that continue to influence his work.

The gathering offered a first look at Urchina Light, a new design by Studio Roderick Vos for Moooi, inspired by the organic geometry of sea urchins. This was an excellent occasion to celebrate Moooi’s history while looking towards what comes next. After such a long time, Marcel was happy to return to BULB, reconnect and celebrate a lasting relationship built on quality.

Thank you BULB Team for your excellent work!

Interview time! What happens when Max Fraser of Dezeen sits down with Marcel Wanders to talk about 25 years of Moooi and the future of design? Looking back, Marcel recalls how the brand challenged an industry filled with restrained imagery, bringing bold visuals, cultural references and storytelling into the picture. Has his mindset changed since those early days? Freedom has always mattered to him, but today he can take more time to explore ideas and embrace uncertainty.

In a world where design can sometimes feel too polite, Marcel’s belief in individuality and creative freedom remains as relevant as ever. And with artificial intelligence capable of generating endless variations of a chair, what makes a design truly meaningful? Perhaps the answer lies in something an algorithm cannot define so easily: a designer’s own way of thinking, the rules they choose to follow and the courage to challenge those set by others.

What a week in Prague! The 28th edition of DesignBlok, Prague International Design Festival brought together more than 300 designers, studios, brands and guests from the Czech Republic and abroad. This year, LIGHT was the central theme, explored as a symbol of knowledge, truth, hope and life. Across Prague’s exceptional venues, exhibitions, installations and conversations explored how light shapes our perception and emotions. It was a celebration of design in all its forms, where material, technology and imagination met.

On 8 October, Marcel Wanders received the DesignBlok Award for Outstanding Contribution to Global Design, recognising a career that has continually challenged the boundaries of contemporary design. From the iconic Knotted Chair to his work for Moooi and his projects in lighting and interiors, Marcel has brought imagination, craftsmanship and emotion to the heart of design. His creations remind us that objects can do more than serve a purpose: they can inspire us, connect us and give meaning to everyday life. The award celebrated this enduring belief and the impact of his work across the world.

Thank you, DesignBlok, for this amazing award!

Every Wonderland needs a beautiful gift, and the Liposome Gift Box places one at the centre of the story. Marcel Wanders surrounds Decorté’s skincare ritual with a purple ribbon, charming flowers and details that suggest beauty, hope and a world just beyond the familiar. Inside, the set brings together Decorté’s Liposome Advanced Repair Cream, Liposome Advanced Repair Serum and Youth Power Essence Lotion, centred on the brand’s Multilamellar Bio Liposome technology.

The cream is created to give skin the appearance of having enjoyed three extra hours of sleep, while the new lotion combines black koji fermentation extract with Decorté’s beauty water. Marcel gives the gift box its own character, making the act of opening a skincare gift feel like unlocking something special. A ribbon, a key, a little mystery, and suddenly the everyday ritual has found its place in Wonderland.

For more than fifteen years, Marcel Wanders has created a special holiday coffret for Decorté almost every year, turning an annual beauty ritual into an occasion for imagination. This year, Alice in Decorté Wonderland gives the tradition a new twist, with a coffret filled with colour, sparkle and the captivating spirit of Wonderland.

Bilberry and white strawberry extracts accompany limited edition shades created exclusively for the coffret, bringing a luminous finish to the skin and complexion. But Marcel’s Wonderland is always about more than what first catches the eye, with familiar objects transformed through unexpected details and a strong sense of fantasy. The coffret becomes a little world of its own, where colour feels magical and beauty takes on a new kind of radiance. Alice has opened the door, and this time the invitation is to see what is waiting on the other side.

Marcel Wanders has given Wonderland a new address: Alice has found her way into the beauty world of DECORTÉ. And Wonderland begins with a question: what might we find when we unlock the door?

Born from the unique collaboration between Marcel Wanders and Decorté, Alice in Decorté Wonderland brings together the Holiday Coffret, Liposome Gift Box, AQ Skincare Gift Box, this year’s Marcel Wanders Powder and Advent Calendar. Each design holds a different piece of this world, filled with keys, ribbons, flowers, curious details and the promise of something unexpected behind the next door. Alice becomes a charming guide through a world where skincare and make up meet imagination, craftsmanship and a little mystery.

With the umbrella for Marks and Spencer, Marcel Wanders brought that same instinct into everyday life. Created during the five year collaboration between Marcel and Marks & Spencer, the design gave an ordinary rainy day accessory a distinctly ornamental character. Rich graphic motifs, inspired by Marcel’s fascination with decorative patterns, transformed the canopy into something to carry with pride. Even the handle and small details received attention, turning touch into part of the experience. Design became something accessible, personal and beautifully unexpected.

The project reflected Marcel’s belief that good design should reach people. His Marks & Spencer collaboration produced nearly 500 gifts and lifestyle pieces between 2010 and 2015, bringing his distinctive vision to a much wider audience. The umbrella belonged to this world of everyday objects made memorable through detail.

Geisha takes the parasol somewhere even more personal and stylish. Created by Marcel Wanders for Symo Parasols, it carries the quiet mystery of Japanese tradition through a refined exterior and a hidden garden of stylised flowers beneath the canopy. A metal bow crowns the pole, recalling the obi of a geisha’s kimono, while the floral interior reveals itself only to those who sit beneath it. Marcel describes this attention to detail as the source of his signature surprise moments. Here, shade becomes a private world, reserved for the people gathered underneath.

From a distance, Geisha appears composed and restrained, while underneath it becomes rich, floral and quietly expressive. Marcel designed it with the delicate appearance he wanted, while ensuring the material could withstand the elements. It protects from sun and rain, yet its real purpose feels more poetic: to change the atmosphere of the place around it.
