In 1888, Reefton became the first town in the Southern Hemisphere with public electric lighting - before London, before Sydney. The gold-rush facades still line Broadway, and the town wears its history proudly

Stand at the top of the Denniston Incline.

Six hundred metres above the sea, coal wagons once plunged down a slope so steep that Victorian engineers called it the eighth wonder of the world. Up on the plateau the wind never really stops, the ruins tell their own stories, and the view runs nearly the whole Buller coastline.

Hard place. Hard people. Unforgettable spot.

Walk the Truman Track to a beach that feels like a secret.

Fifteen minutes through rainforest and nikau palms, then the bush opens up and there it is - a wild little cove of tiny smooth stones, with a waterfall spilling over the cliff edge and caverns carved into the rock. Visit at low tide if you want to explore the beach properly.

Small walk. Big payoff.

Meet the fur seal colony at Tauranga Bay.

A ten-minute walk from the car park brings you to a viewing platform perched high above the colony - and from up there the rocks come alive.

Seals dozing, squabbling, flopping between the rock pools, all completely unbothered by their audience. Bring binoculars or a zoom lens if you've got one; the pups are the show-stealers.

Spot a weka. Then guard your lunch.

You won't have to look hard - the weka usually finds you. Cheeky, flightless, and completely unbothered by your personal space, they patrol car parks and campsites across Buller like they own the place. (They do.)

Whatever you do, don't feed them - they've already got a plan for your sandwich.

This Saturday 🎊👏 Let's get behind this new local market for our town. This could become a monthly thing but like anything, it needs support - so head along this Saturday from 9am to 2pm. It's in the Epic carpark and inside the building too.

Big ups to the organisers. Events like this help Westport be the vibrant, fun place it can be; for families, friends and visitors to gather together, and enjoy both the market and the many shops, scenic walks and hospitality on offer here.
