Fundraising for a great cause!

It's a PINK fun day for a cause - 17 May

After reading the RCP’s Pink Ribbon Breakfast article, which encouraged people to find creative ways to raise money for breast cancer, Jenny Pendlebury-Sanders decided to get involved. With help from her friends, she is organising a fun, family-friendly event on Sunday, 17 May at the Whanganui Seaside Holiday Park, 1A Rangiora Street.

Linda McAlister, who owns the holiday park and is both Jenny’s employer and friend, is fully behind the event. It will run from 12 to 2 pm and includes lawn games, swimming, a brunch sausage sizzle, bouncy castle, and a free raffle ticket for every attendee. There’s also a prize for the best pink outfit.

The event is all about having fun, supporting a great cause, and bringing the community closer together.

Jenny and her friends have faced breast cancer in different ways. Jenny’s grandmother died from breast cancer at age 40, and Jenny herself travels to Palmerston North every six months for check-ups. Her friend Karen lost both parents to cancer at just 53, and Natasha is supporting her good friend, who is still in treatment.

Jenny has gathered some great mystery prizes for the event, and feels humbled by the support from local businesses like Gonville Pharmacy, Chemist Warehouse, Angel Touch, and Whanganui Photo & Print on Victoria Ave, Wild Oats, The Tattoo Studio and The Mad Butcher. Shane from Go Bouncy is kindly providing a bouncy castle for the day, free of charge.

Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery has also provided prizes, and the Davis Library has supported, too.

Jenny moved to Whanganui to care for her brother, Mark Haddon, who had cancer. It has been eight months since he passed away. Jenny says that planning and organising the event with a wonderful group of women, along with the community’s positive response, has “helped with my mental health. I was in an isolated bubble.”

All the women agree that connecting with others and raising awareness for the cause is invaluable.

Come along this Sunday and join in.

The price for a barrel of fun is $10 for adults and a gold coin donation for children.
Vicky from Small Acres Welsh Ponies will be there too, offering rides for a small charge, to support the day.

From Left: Linda McAlister, Natasha Trower, Karen Riwaka and Jenny Pendlebury-Sanders with just some of the goodies for the day.
