The Zephyr, on the last of the gravel.
She’s on the road with new framing, wooden windows that open right up, wool insulation, birch ply, cork floors, linen curtains and solar-powered brass lights. After our first builder didn’t work out, Pete Alldridge took her on. He found the wooden windows secondhand, tracked down vintage brass latches, and lovingly moulded the birch ply to her original curves.

We meet you here in the carpark and drive you over the bridge and up to your place in the electric cart. From there, the three nights are yours.
Before you book, you can read the reflection questions on the website. Answer them before you arrive, and if you’d like, we’ll turn your answers into a simple plan for your stay. Or don’t. Some people just come to stay.

After dark.
There are more kiwi calling at night than when we arrived. We hand-pull the blackberry, use no sprays, and keep the possums down. Part of the forest is left alone entirely.
Leave the windows open and you may hear them, and the ruru. The clipboard in each unit has a QR code to our kiwi log, where guests add what they’ve heard.

A fallen Kauri leaf from our Northland forest, cast in bronze by Silver, Bronze & Gold Jewellery | Art | Nature in Punakaiki. Every vein of the original leaf is there.

Kauri are taonga. Among the largest and longest-living trees on earth, they belong to the domain of Tāne Mahuta. A Kauri leaf is a piece of deep time.

These hang on gold-filled hooks not plated. Gold-filled has 100× more gold content and lasts years, not months.

Solo retreats run in three places.
The Tree House, in the canopy, built from kauri first cut in this area, salvaged from a 1900 villa and brought back to the forest.
The Tin Box, under a floating roof with a fire pit and open sky.
The Hideaway, a 1910 kauri cottage beside a spring stream.
Each has a cast iron bath outside. You choose when you book.
