The world goes quiet here.
Off-grid on the Kauri Coast, 3km from Trounson Kauri Park. Wrapped in ancient forest, under some of the darkest skies in Northland. No traffic. No hum. Just canopy, birdsong, water and stars.

Twenty-five years ago this table was made for me from timber from my parentsโ€™ farm. Not a nail in it.

It came to Auckland, where it held a lot of good years. Lots of dinner parties and late nights.

Now it lives on the Hideaway deck, stream running below, with views of the forest and the secret garden. When the top started to look tired, I decided it deserved more than a sand and a coat of oil.

So: angle grinder to open the surface. Then the flame - shou sugi ban, the Japanese technique of charring wood to protect it and reveal what was always inside. In a week or so when the coat of linseed has cured Iโ€™ll finish it with a homemade beeswax polish.
