Labour Day on Railway Road. While most of Hawke's Bay is making the most of the long weekend, the team here is busy turning rooms around: fresh linen on every bed, bathrooms checked, and the courtyard tidied before the next guests arrive from 2pm. It's the quiet work nobody sees, and it's the part we're proudest of.

The saltwater pool is open again for the season too, if a spring stay in Hastings is on your list.

Drove past the vineyards on the way in this morning and the rows have finally gone green. Late October around Hastings — weeks of bare wood, then the colour turns up.

If you have a spare hour, take the back roads through Gimblett Gravels or out toward Havelock North. No cellar-door booking required. The light hangs around later now, so a slow loop still gets you home before dinner.

Portmans is on Railway Road when you have had enough of the car. Drop us a message if you are thinking of a stay.

Some guests arrive with every hour of their Hawke's Bay trip planned. Others turn up with nothing on the list except a good night's sleep. Both suit us just fine. Check in any time from 2pm to 8pm, use the free parking and Wi-Fi, and work out what Hastings has in store tomorrow once you've settled in. Whatever kind of traveller you are, Railway Road is ready when you are.

Weekend tip from reception: get to the Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market early on Sunday morning. Local growers, fresh bread, good coffee and whatever is just in season, all a short drive from Railway Road. Fill a bag for the room, then spend the afternoon out among the vineyards. Portmans is an easy base when you want to see the best of Hastings without rushing.

We get asked where the laundry is more often than you'd think. Fair enough. A few days on the road and the suitcase tells on you.

The guest laundry is on site for anyone staying with us. Housekeeping keeps it in the same nick as the rooms: bench clear, ready to use, nothing left behind.

Not the glamorous part of a motor lodge. The useful part. If you're in Hastings more than a night or two, you'll probably be glad it's there.

Quiet mornings on Railway Road start in the courtyard. A table in the sun, rooms close by, and Hastings just down the road when you are ready to head out. Portmans is an easy place to come back to after a day around Hawke's Bay.

Milder days for a coffee in Hastings, a drive out through the orchards toward Havelock North, or a loop into Napier — then back to a quiet courtyard on Railway Road when you want the pace to drop. Easy base, free parking, and free Wi-Fi if you are planning a spring staycation or a weekend away.

A question we hear at reception most weeks: what is worth doing with one free afternoon in Hastings? Our answer is usually to keep it simple. Coffee in town, a drive out to Napier for a stroll along Marine Parade, then dinner back in Havelock North or Hastings. Come home to Railway Road, free on-site parking and a quiet night's sleep. If you are staying with us soon, just ask at the desk and we will happily point you in the right direction.
