The one-bedroom twins are for people travelling together who still want their own bed — workmates, siblings, a parent and a teenager. Not a couple squeezed onto a double they didn't ask for.

The kitchen tells us whether a room is actually ready. Wet bench or a fridge that still smells like last night, and the rest of the clean isn't finished.

Housekeeping empties it, wipes the surfaces, and puts the cups and plates back before the next person collects a key.

You don't need to leave it spotless. That's our job once you've checked out.

Lambing is underway on the farms around Hastings.

Look left on the Waimarama road and along the Tuki Tuki: ewes with this year's lambs close to the fence, and the odd one determined to stand in the middle of it. Spring isn't official yet. The district hasn't waited.

If you're staying with us, take the long way to the beach rather than the straight shot. August air still has a bite, so bring a jumper.

Shop on the way into Hastings and the first morning looks after itself.

The one-bedroom units have a kitchenette, so milk goes in the fridge and breakfast happens when you wake up — not when a cafe unlocks. No circling for a park. No waiting on a table.

Town is a few minutes away whenever you want a proper coffee. Until then, you don't have to go anywhere.

Travelling with family or a colleague? You'll want a door you can shut.

The two-bedroom units put a lounge in the middle — sofa, coffee table, two sleeping rooms off either side. Kids can go down early. Someone can take a call without whispering.

A studio gets tight after day two with more than one person in it. This layout is the answer to that.

We've been looking at an empty racecourse from the car park for two winters. That changes on 9 and 10 October.

The Livamol Classic is back at Hastings Racecourse — first proper meeting since the track closed for repairs. It's 200 metres from us, close enough that the race calls used to carry right across the motel.

Spring racing, a full grandstand again, and a course that's been missed. Good to see Hawke's Bay racing back where it belongs.

Drive the back roads out past Twyford or Pakowhai this week and you'll spot it — the first blossom opening on the stone fruit trees, a soft pink haze that wasn't there a fortnight ago.

It's early yet. Full bloom across the district's orchards usually holds off until closer to September, but this first flush is a decent sign winter's on its way out.

Worth a slow drive if you're staying with us and fancy seeing Hawke's Bay do something other than grey skies for a change. Ask at reception and we'll point you toward the best roads for it.

Between checkout and check-in, someone works through every bathroom in the building and tops up what's missing — soap, shampoo, coffee sachets, toilet paper. Guests notice when it's not done. Nobody notices when it is.

Our housekeeping team runs through a checklist for each room, one by one, before anyone else arrives. It's not a glamorous job, counting sachets and refilling dispensers, but it means the next guest gets a room that's properly stocked, not just tidied.

Next time you check in and everything's exactly where it should be, that's the job working.

The Hawke's Bay Farmers' Market runs every Sunday morning at the Hastings Showgrounds, all year round, including through winter. Stallholders set up early with whatever's in season — citrus, greens, fresh bread, local honey — regardless of the weather.

It's a five minute drive from Portmans, or a decent walk if you don't mind a bit of frost on the way. Worth getting there early too, since the good stuff sells out before most people have finished their coffee.

If you're staying with us this weekend and want directions, just ask at reception — we can point you the quickest way.

A guest laundry doesn't get much attention until you actually need it — day four of a work trip, or the kids have gone through every outfit you packed for a long weekend.

Ours is tucked away and simple to use, no coins-only guesswork or broken machines. It's a small thing, but it's the sort of detail that makes a longer stay in Hastings a lot less stressful.

If you're here for a few nights rather than one, it's worth knowing it's there.
