As a family of architects and builders, we designed Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses to be a contemporary country hotel. Not limiting our design efforts to the building, we also designed and handcrafted - with local wood working friends - the majority of the furniture throughout the Lodge, including the custom designed beds that some guests say are, "the most comfortable beds in the South Island.”

We began in 2003 with six guest rooms in the Main Lodge and the Olive House. In 2006, we added the five luxury Tree Houses. In 2009 we remodelled the Main Lodge, converting the six rooms into four - two Suites, one Lodge Room, and the Hapuku Room - and also added a lap-pool and sauna.

A month on from being awarded One MICHELIN Key in 2026, we’re reflecting on the words that capture Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses so beautifully.

“Splendidly located, stunningly designed.”

From our contemporary Tree Houses nestled in the landscape to the thoughtful details that shape each stay, it’s a lovely reflection of what makes Hapuku Lodge unique.

We’re grateful to the MICHELIN Guide for the recognition, and to our team for bringing the Hapuku Lodge experience to life every day.

At Matau, the kitchen starts with what Kaikōura gives us.

Fernando and Akhil bring it to the table with precision, curiosity and a deep respect for the produce.

A new dining experience at Hāpuku Lodge, shaped by the coast, the land and the people behind it.

Some moments deserve a setting that feels just as special as the occasion. 💛

“Our stay at Hapuku Lodge was the highlight of our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived, we felt completely looked after and welcomed. The room was stunning, the setting peaceful, and the food exceptional. Every course felt carefully prepared and truly special. It was the kind of place where you slow down, relax, and savour every moment. We couldn’t have imagined a better place to celebrate such an important time in our lives.”

We’re honoured to be part of such meaningful memories. Wishing you a lifetime of beautiful adventures together. ✨

Introducing Akhil Stephen, our Sous Chef at Matau. He brings creativity, precision, and an unwavering passion for pushing culinary boundaries to every plate he crafts.

A global perspective: His journey through kitchens around the world has shaped a style that’s both refined and exploratory. At Hāpuku, that translates into a space where ideas are encouraged, grounded by incredible local produce and a strong sense of place.

Friday, and the bar is open.

Start with a Clover Club before dinner. This classic is spring in a glass and the perfect way to toast the new space with us.

Kaikōura means “a meal of crayfish”, so the menu at our new dining room, Matau, starts at the water. Tarakihi, flounder and other whole fish are dry-aged in-house, and kōura comes from just down the road. Each dish is built around what the coast gives us that day.
