Recently National Geographic visited the Mackenzie Basin to tell the story of one of the world’s rarest birds- the remarkable Kaki- Black Stilt.

It was an experience about sharing a landscape we care deeply about, and helping shine light on a species found nowhere else on 🌍Earth.

For us, this story captures what makes the Mackenzie Country so extraordinary— vast landscapes, rare wildlife and the feeling of venturing into somewhere truly special.

Keen stargazer? Ruakahu Lodge is situated in the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve - an area of extremely low light pollution which means it's the best spot to view the stars. Either sitting on the deck, or enjoying the view from the outdoor tub, the stars are spectacular with no telescopes required. Stargazing can be done at any time of the year and is best during a new moon (just a sliver)! So check out the calendars and book your stargazing escape at Ruakahu!
