Skotel Alpine Resort is New Zealand’s highest hotel and is located in the heart of the North Island within the Tongariro National Park. It is conveniently located in Whakapapa Village at the foot of Mount Ruapehu, within 500 meters of Tongariro National Park Whakapapa Visitor Centre. Hiking trails start directly at the hotel and the Ska Waka as well as the Mount Ruapehu ski field (Jun-Oct.) The hotel offers guests a variety of room types, from Backpacker rooms to View rooms of the Tongariro National Park and the volcanic mountain peaks of Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu. The hotel is the ideal base for exploring the UNESCO world heritage park – and the many hiking and biking trails in the area. We also offer lunch packages so you won’t get hungry on your adventures. From the hotel you can walk to Taranaki Falls, Tama Lakes and Silika Rapids and for those up for a day trail walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Shuttles for the crossing can be booked upon arrival and leave from our doorstep. After an exciting day hiking, biking, skiing (Jun-Oct) or sight-seeing guests can enjoy a refreshing sauna, a relaxing spa, or unwind over a drink or a meal at the Skotel Restaurant and Bar. A quick update on Ski and Snowboard Day Passes at Whakapapa this spring. ⛷️🏂

We've made a few changes to make getting on the mountain a little simpler and better value for the rest of the 2026 winter season, including a new All Mountain Anytime 2-Day Pass.

At $134 for adults and $89 for youth, it works out to just $67 per day for adults and $44.50 per day for youth. The best part? Your two days don't need to be consecutive. Use them across two different days before the end of the winter season or if you have any unused days, use them for sightseeing during the upcoming summer season.

We've also updated our All Mountain Anytime Day Pass, which is now the same price online every day of the week, including weekends. An adult pass is now $119 and a youth pass is $79.

"We had a 2-night stay in the Ngauruhoe Room. The room was so warm and cozy. The view was amazing, especially at sunset and sunrise. They have a small area for kids to play, and provide board games and books as well. We will definitely stay there again!"
