At Pihopa, breakfast begins with a walk through grounds that have been part of Nelson’s story since 1862, followed by the opening of a small wooden chapel built in 1877.

Inside, you are met with fresh juice, barista coffee, warm baking, homemade granola and a chef-prepared breakfast chosen from the morning’s menu.
Much of the produce comes from close by, including the kitchen garden just outside.

The setting has history, but the feeling is intimate rather than formal.

A beautiful place to decide what the day might hold - or whether it needs to hold very much at all.

Spring does not arrive at Pīhopa all at once.

It begins in the lengthening afternoon, in new colour through the orchard, in birds becoming louder across the heritage woodland.
Doors stay open a little longer.
A balcony becomes somewhere to linger rather than simply admire.
The walk to breakfast in the chapel feels different under a brighter sky.

After winter’s intimacy, September brings a sense of possibility to the estate - and to Nelson beyond the gates.
It is a lovely month to arrive without overfilling the diary.

Six suites. And an extraordinary amount of space between everything else.

From above, you begin to understand what makes Pihopa different.

The suites sit quietly within the estate, surrounded by mature trees, gardens and the gentle rise of the Nelson landscape. Beyond them, the city and Tasman Bay stretch towards the horizon.

One of the English oaks at Pīhopa was planted in 1864 by Edmund and Walter, the young sons of Nelson’s first Bishop. It has watched the estate change for more than a century and a half.

Today, it is one of 14 protected trees across the grounds, alongside a heritage woodland that gives the retreat much of its sense of permanence. There is something grounding about staying among trees with longer memories than ours.

Walk beneath them in the late-winter light and the pace of the day seems to adjust itself.

Luxury sometimes reveals itself in surprising ways.

Two separate vanities.
A walk-in shower.
A deep jacuzzi bath.
Enough space to get ready for dinner without negotiating the same square metre.

Add warm robes, slippers and the option to sink into the bath afterwards, and the bathroom becomes less functional room, more end-of-day ritual.

Our suites are generous because they are designed for living in, not simply sleeping in. It is the kind of detail that barely registers in photographs - then feels indispensable once you are here.
