The Laughing Owl is the inspiration behind everything we do.

Once found throughout New Zealand, it's distinctive call echoed through the night. But the Laughing Owl did not survive. Today, it is extinct - a unique part of New Zealand's natural history that has been lost.

Which is exactly why we're getting behind one that did.

The Ruru is New Zealand's only surviving native owl.

So for Forest & Bird's Bird of the Year 2026, we're backing a survivor.

The Ruru has never won Bird of the Year. We think it's time to change that.
