The Spring bulbs at Hereweka are reaching a peak. What pleasure they bring as do the Japanese flowering Cherries and Magnolias which will be at their full glory in another week. It’s a wonderful time to visit our garden.

We collected seaw**d yesterday for a new compost heap and the organic vegetable garden at Hereweka. We will put some in our glasshouse to help prepare the soil for tomato plants later in the season.

The composting flush toilet at Hereweka. In the Retreat accommodation it looks like an ordinary flush toilet but hidden below the Retreat behind the trees and foliage is the composting unit.

Two weeks later the compost heap at Hereweka is ready to turn. I want to save it to use in our glasshouse. All the seaw**d we used will add extra nutritions for the tomato plants.

Our winter table of garden treasures at Hereweka. We grow plants in our nursery especially for tor this table so that we can refresh it regularly. There is always something to see at Hereweka Garden no matter what time of year.

Our asparagus bed is benefiting from the extra seaw**d we collected for the compost heap. It benefits from some rich food and mulch at this time of year. The see w**d is perfect.

An organic compost heap, just about complete!
Hereweka Garden has grown from our passion for organic gardening—a passion that began more than 40 years ago. As students, we were members of the Compost Society in Dunedin, where we learned the value of creating healthy soil from natural ingredients.
That passion has stayed with us ever since. We take pride in our hot composting method, which is quick, effective, and surprisingly simple when you have the right mix of ingredients. The winter evenings in our garden at Hereweka can be breathtaking. Yesterday the red sky added a special ambience to the experience. Our luxury Retreat accommodation is perfect destination for a winter break.
