Kiwi Listening is in full action again.

Paul is the committed listener on our mountain. You may note he ran out of space to list the endless calls that were happening during one of his two hour listening periods.

Kiwi listening involves volunteers and researchers going out at night to listen for kiwi calls. By recording how many kiwi are calling, where the calls come from, and whether the calls are male or female, Backyard Kiwi can estimate population numbers and track changes over time.
At Whangārei Heads, the estimated kiwi population has increased dramatically since monitoring began in 2001, thanks to community conservation work.
