Kapowai Retreat

In mid March we responded to the call of helping transport and re-introduce kiwi back into the Kapowai area after their booming population success at Mototapu Island. Sara has the rare job of kiwi handling! Doing our best to be quiet and keeping them calm, she swiftly moves them to a makeshift burrow, carefully prepared earlier. By nightfall, they will venture out, calling to their new friends and making their new home. we found an easy place to access, by a flowing creek, creating 3 burrows as make-shift shelters. Over 3 days, 7 kiwi were placed, 4 females, 3 males, blessed by Craig Balsom, Ngati Hei representative. In the mornings I checked on the burrows to make sure they had moved on to their new homes. Their names are;

Natalie, Issac, Anita, Petra, Hunter, Hazel, Jaxon.

After having a kiwi named after me a few years ago, I found a natural incentive to be involved so went with that theory, (I see what ya did there) these kids were also onlookers at the time which just happened to work out perfectly with the sexes! Hopefully we have a whole generation invested in the protection of kiwi now! Spanning Kapowai- Whenuakite at both ends of the kapowai forest.

Getting ready for guests!

We have a beautiful house ready for Wwoofers accommodation now for this autumn and winter. Can suit 4 to 6 energetic souls looking for their next adventure. We will be cutting trees and mulching, a bit of cooking and preserving in the rainy weather. We are close to Hot Water Beach, which is a great option in the cooler months!
