Everyone books Bocas for January. September gets more sun. ☀️

It’s the one thing about these islands that never makes the brochure: Bocas doesn’t follow Panama’s dry-season calendar. We have our own. September averages more daily sunshine than any other month here — around 8.3 hours a day — while January, the month everyone books, averages the least. November and December are our wettest weeks of the year, not our best.

And the sea goes flat. September and October are when the water calms down enough to make the far cayos easy — Zapatilla, Cayo Coral, the spots that get called off when the swell is up. Boats go further. The snorkeling is clearer. The beaches are emptier, because most of the world is still looking at a January calendar.

Does it still rain? Of course. This is a rainforest. Showers roll through, they pass in twenty minutes, and that’s exactly why everything here is green.

Best light of the year, calmest water of the year, and the town mostly to yourself. That’s September in Bocas.

One hotel, a room for every kind of traveler. 🌴

Some guests want the top floor: a full suite with a sitting room, a four-poster bed, and a balcony where the Caribbean starts about fifteen meters from your feet. Some want the corner room with three windows over the harbour and coffee waiting on the shelf. Some want our classic rooms — travertine, hardwood, ceiling fan turning slow. And some want our newest rooms in the back building, quiet, tucked into the garden with your own outdoor seat under the palms.

All of it in the middle of Bocas Town. Restaurants, bars and the water taxi dock are a walk away — but step through our gate and it goes quiet. Breakfast included, every morning.

Walk down Main Street from our front door and you’ll end up standing in front of him. 🌴

Simón Bolívar never set foot in Panama. But in 1815, writing from exile in Jamaica, he put it in ink: “¡Qué bello sería que el istmo de Panamá fuese para nosotros lo que el de Corinto para los griegos!” — and he meant it. In 1826 he called his congress of the new American republics to meet in Panama City, the place he had chosen as the meeting ground of a united America. That was two hundred years ago this year.

Bocas traces its own beginnings to that same decade, when these islands were still Gran Colombian soil — Bolívar’s republic. The park at the center of our town has carried his name since the early 1900s.

Then read the plaque. “Del pueblo venezolano al pueblo bocatoreño — Febrero 1994.” Not from a government to a government. From one people to another. And cast into the bronze itself, in letters most people walk right past, his own words from Caracas in 1814: “No he venido a oprimiros con mis armas vencedoras; he venido a traeros el imperio de las leyes.”

Venezuela sent him. Bocas gave him the best spot in town. Two hundred years later he’s still standing in the middle of our park, under the palms, in the rain and sun, watching Main Street go by. 🇻🇪🇵🇦

🏄 Surfers — world-class when it’s firing. Fast, hollow, heavy, for experienced riders (local camps run lessons if you’re working up to it).
🏊 Swimmers — waves break right at the shore and currents run strong. Wade, don’t dive deep — or hit La Piscina, a calm natural tide pool up the jungle trail. 🌴
🐢 Dreamers — just walk. Empty sand, swaying palms, and from April–August leatherback, green & hawksbill turtles nest here at night.
🍴 Hungry — The View at Oasis, Bon Bon Beach Bar & The Hummingbird sit right on the sand for ceviche and sunset cocktails.
