The Canopy Family, Panama

The Canopy Family, Panama The Canopy Family is a group of three birding eco-lodges located in Panama, surrounded by some of the best birding areas in Central America.

The Canopy Family offers three unique accommodations situated in some of the best birding locations in Central America. The Canopy Tower, located in Soberania National Park not far from Panama City, is an ex US-military radar tower that has been converted into a high-quality eco-lodge. Right from your room, our dining hall or observation deck, you can come face to face with some of the exciting bi

rds and animals living in the forest canopy, including Green Shrike-Vireo, Scarlet-rumped Cacique and both Two-toed and Three-toed Sloths. The Canopy Lodge is located in the picturesque foothills town of El Valle de Anton. From our veranda you can watch our fruit feeders and birds in the garden and along the creek that weaves through the property. Our newest eco-lodge, Canopy Camp Darien, located in the heart of eastern Panama, has comfortable Safari-style Eco-Tents and offers access to some of the most expansive lowland rain forest in the Americas. During our Canopy Camp birding tour, we search for the regional specialties of Darien. The Canopy Bed & Breakfast is located in the canal town of Gamboa, where the Rio Chagres meets the Panama Canal. It is perfect for families and is within walking distance from the famous Pipeline Road. The Canopy Adventure is a short walk from the Canopy Lodge in El Valle de Anton, and here you can enjoy our zip-line and trails through beautiful foothill forests. The Canopy Adventure and Canopy Lodge are located only 2 hours west of Panama City. The Canopy Tower, Canopy Lodge and Canopy Camp offer world-class, unique birding and natural history experiences, led by friendly, knowledgeable bilingual guides.

With a unique combination of buffy wing-bars and a tailless appearance, the Wing-banded Antbird
(Myrmornis torquata) can be found in the lower levels of the rainforest foraging near the forest floor.

Uncommon but unmistakable, this amazing antbird flips leaves over, looking similar to a leaftosser.

This one was recorded by our Canopy Family guide Oscar Fría (.fria.351) during a tour with visitors staying at the Canopy Camp, Darién. Book your tour with us to go on lifetime adventures in Panama 🇵🇦🌿🙌🏽

The Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida) is one of Panama’s most striking birds, dazzling with its brilliant green plumage and black markings. Found in the humid cloud forests of western Panama, this colorful tanager often travels in mixed-species flocks as it searches for fruits and insects among the treetops.

Join us in the cloud forests of Panama while staying at the Canopy Lodge for a chance to see this spectacular bird and many other tropical species in their natural habitat!

Small but unforgettable!

The American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) is the smallest kingfisher found in Panama. Despite its tiny size, this secretive hunter is an expert at catching small fish and aquatic insects along quiet forest streams and wetlands.

With its rich rufous underparts and metallic green upperparts, spotting one is always a special. Join us in Panama 🇵🇦🌿 and experience finding this remarkable little kingfisher in its natural habitat!

Love is in the air… Pearl Kite style! 💕

The Pearl Kite (Gampsonyx swainsonii) may be tiny—just 9–10 inches long—but it’s a fierce little predator! With white underparts, a chestnut throat, and a dark mask, this raptor feeds on insects, small reptiles, and even little birds.

Pearl Kites build small stick nests in trees or ledges, laying 2–3 eggs. Both parents help feed the chicks, which fledge after about a month. Breeding usually happens during the rainy season when food is plentiful.

Visit us to watch this species in Panama and many more episodes of our amazing birds! 🇵🇦🙌🏽
