April 19 - Bicycle Day
On this day in 1943, Albert Hofmann mounted his bicycle and rode straight into the unknown.
After an earlier, unexpected exposure, Hofmann made a deliberate decision: to explore the substance he had created. He ingested 250 micrograms of L*D-an amount that would prove to be profoundly powerful, far beyond anything he could have anticipated. What followed was the first intentional psychedelic journey in human history, a passage through shifting realities, dissolving forms, and the raw intensity of the mind encountering itself.
Working at Sandoz Laboratories, Hofmann had been studying compounds derived from ergot fungus, searching for medicinal value. Instead, he uncovered something far stranger-an instrument capable of amplifying perception, emotion, and consciousness to overwhelming degrees.
He later described L*D as his “problem child,” recognizing both its immense potential and the risks of misunderstanding it. For Hofmann, this was never about escape-it was about revelation, about reconnecting with nature, awe, and the deep mystery underlying existence.
Bicycle Day is not just a historical moment-it’s a reminder of what happens when human curiosity crosses into the infinite.
Years later, Terence McKenna gave language to that frontier. He spoke of psychedelics as tools for encounter-gateways into the hidden architectures of reality, where imagination, language, and being itself begin to dissolve and recombine.
In a world that trains us to look outward, today we remember the power of turning inward.
“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles.”
Stay curious. Stay wild. Ride gently through the mind.
