This costume a striking modern Filipiniana inspired by the Philippine crocodile (Crocodylus mindorensis), a freshwater species found exclusively in the Philippines.

The Philippine crocodile is classified as a critically endangered species and is considered one of the rarest crocodilians in the world. Its population has suffered a drastic decline, with recent estimates suggesting that fewer than 140 mature individuals remain in the wild today. This drop in numbers is primarily driven by severe habitat destruction, hunting, and unsustainable practices like dynamite fishing. Highlighting this animal on a global stage underscores the absolute necessity of conservation; protecting these apex predators ultimately means protecting the vital river and wetland ecosystems they inhabit.

The costume vividly brings this concept to life through a fierce yet elegant two-piece ensemble crafted from heavily patterned fabric that mimics the intricate scales of crocodilian skin. The look also features vibrant green vines and foliage that evoke the crocodile's natural marshy habitat. It also features an elaborate headdress of sharp spikes and greenery, complemented by dramatic, elongated black claws and a lifelike crocodile companion resting in her arms. It serves as a powerful call to end the destruction of our environment and to embrace compassionate stewardship of the Earth's most vulnerable creatures.

This costume is a golden Filipiniana inspired by the Samar cobra (Naja samarensis), a species found only in the Philippines.

The design also draws heavy inspiration from Luyong Kabig, the ancient mythological goddess of snakes. By channeling this powerful deity, the costume weaves a narrative of mystique, authority, and reverence for nature, intertwining the deadly beauty of the endemic cobra with the rich tapestry of Philippine folklore.

The silhouette is loosely based on the iconic Egyptian queen Cleopatra, but masterfully reimagined with a distinct Filipino touch. The golden ensemble features the structured butterfly sleeves of a classic Filipiniana paired with a strapless bodice adorned with black, winding serpent patterns and a heavy, beaded collar necklace. It features a towering, regal headpiece embedded with rising black snake motifs. Adding a traditional texture, the straight under-skirt features a neutral plaid weave. The most dramatic elements are the wide, floor-length hanging sleeve banners lined with beaded fringe, which explicitly display the titles "The Samar Cobra" and its scientific name, "Naja samarensis," above vivid, printed illustrations of the golden snake in its natural habitat.

This costume pays homage to the Tboli and Blaan tribes. While not made from the Tboli's own weave Tnalak, it draws inspiration from their ethnic attire and musical instruments, such as the boat lute known as "hegelung" and drums called "tenonggong." Additionally, it incorporates elements like the accessories called "sewat" and the Blaan way of tying their headgear known as "utob."

Although the components of the costume are just inspired by the traditional wear of these Indigenous Peoples (IP) groups and are not authentic, the choice to highlight the Tboli and Blaan cultures aims to raise awareness about the importance of respecting and accurately representing their heritage. Using apostrophes in the names of these tribes, like Blaan and Tboli, can be offensive, disrespectful, and dismissive of their rich cultural traditions.

In our commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity, it is crucial to emphasize the correct spelling and pronunciation of tribal names. While it may seem like a small detail, it holds significant meaning for Indigenous communities who have long been marginalized. It is a must that we celebrate and honor the cultural diversity of our Indigenous Peoples by recognizing and respecting their identities in the most authentic and respectful manner.

This costume is inspired by the black-naped oriole, one of the iconic birds of the Philippines, locally known as "Kilyawan".

The Kilyawan (Oriolus chinensis) is an unmistakable, brightly colored songbird native to the Philippines, easily recognized by its vibrant golden-yellow plumage, black wing accents, and a distinct black mask that wraps around its eyes and joins at the back of its neck. Known for its rich, melodious, and clear whistling calls that echo through forest edges and urban gardens, this beautiful bird holds a special place in local nature and folklore. It represents the lively rhythm of the country's avian biodiversity, bringing color and song to the Philippine skies.

The costume brings the striking aesthetics of the bird to life through a bold yellow and black ensemble. The headpiece is designed as a stylized bird head, showcasing a prominent pink beak and an arrangement of black feathers, complemented by an ornate yellow beaded veil that frames the face and drapes down the shoulders. This costume is inspired by the Anahaw, the Philippine National Leaf.

The Anahaw (Saribus rotundifolius), recognized as the national leaf of the Philippines, is a native palm celebrated for its large, glossy green, fan-shaped leaves. It serves a wide variety of practical and aesthetic purposes in traditional Filipino life, commonly used as a durable thatching material for rural roofs, a natural wrapper for local delicacies, and a primary medium for weaving handheld fans (abaniko), hats, and baskets. It stands as a cultural emblem because it beautifully symbolizes Filipino ingenuity, adaptability, and resilienceโ€”mirroring the spirit of a people who shape a common, ordinary plant into a vital and elegant part of daily heritage.

The costume captures the striking symmetry and vibrant green hues of the palm leaf. It features a majestic backpiece crafted from two massive, sprawling real Anahaw leaves that showcase their natural, pleated fan texture. The ensemble includes an intricately layered green bodice with a central fan motif on the chest, bordered by detailed gold and green beaded fringes that drape over the waist. This matches a textured, patterned loincloth-style kilt piece also trimmed with hanging beads. The look is completed with structured green armbands, tiered beaded leg guards worn around the shins, and a matching chevron-patterned crown headpiece.

This costume is inspired by the Philippine red-vented cockatoo locally known as "Katala".

The Katala (Cacatua haematuropygia) is a critically endangered species endemic to the Philippines. Characterized by its snowy white plumage and a distinct splash of red and yellow feathers under its tail, this magnificent bird has suffered a drastic decline in population due to rampant illegal poaching for the pet trade and widespread deforestation. Using this creature as inspiration brings its fight for survival into the spotlight, driving home the urgent need to shield its surviving population from extinction.

The costume captures the essence of the bird through a striking, stylized design. The ensemble features an elaborate white crown-like headpiece adorned with tall, upright white feathers that mimic the cockatooโ€™s iconic crest. The heavily embellished white bodice is adorned with beads and sequins, accented by an intricate necklace and a layered hip belt complete with fiery orange, red, and yellow hanging beaded fringes. Dramatic, tiered white feathered wings extend from the arms, and a miniature replica of the Katala rests on the right hand. The lower half of the outfit consists of matching beaded bands over white knee-high socks, high platform heels, and a long, flowing multi-layered train made of white, deep burgundy, and yellow fabrics spread elegantly on the floor.

This costume draws its radiant heart from the Sampaguita (Jasminum sambac), the Philippinesโ€™ national flower.

The design honors how these fragrant blossoms are transformed into garlands sold outside churches, a practice woven into the fabric of Filipino Catholic devotion. Vendors, often women and children seeking a better life, offer the garlands as acts of charity and prayerโ€”a simple gesture charged with reverence, used to adorn altars, statues of saints like the Virgin Mary, or the Cross itself.

Gleaming with meaning, the ensemble features a Sampaguita garland motif enhanced by delicate lace appliquรฉ, hand-sewn beads, and rhinestones. The overall look nods to the Maria Clara or Traje de Mestiza, a quintessential Filipino dress. This traditional attire comprises the baroโ€™t saya (blouse and skirt) and the paรฑuelo (neckerchief), complemented by a hand fan, or abanikoโ€”a timeless symbol of grace, modesty, and subtle, unspoken communication among Filipinas.

In harmony, the costume fuses the archipelagoโ€™s rich cultural heritage, the national flower Sampaguita, the enduring Roman Catholic faith, and the elegance of the Maria Clara or Traje de Mestiza tradition into a single, compelling expression of Filipino identity.

This costume is inspired by the "Tandikan", or Palawan peacock-pheasant.

Tandikan, or Palawan peacock-pheasant is a bird endemic to the province and is featured prominently in the culture of the indigenous people of Palawan. The bird is also depicted in the official seal of the city of Puerto Princesa.

With teal, black, orange, gold, and various shades of blue, Tandikan has inspired the true color of Palawan's celebration of its ecological grandeur and tourism development. It is the inspiration behind the celebration of the annual Tandikan Festival in Puerto Princesa.

The costume perfectly represents a king, as its royally grand and colorful feathers symbolizes self-confidence, self-esteem, dignity, refinement, knowledge, pride, and beauty.

This costume draws its awe-inspiring design from Rafflesia, the genus famed for harboring the worldโ€™s largest flowers.

The Philippines, a key haven for several Rafflesia speciesโ€”including the endemic R. speciosa in Panay and R. philippensis in Luzonโ€”hosts these extraordinary parasitic plants, which grow hidden inside host vines (Tetrastigma) and reveal their massive, foul-smelling blooms only briefly. These remarkable blossoms face threats from habitat loss.

This costume project shines a light on that danger, reminding Filipinos that these plantsโ€”and our wider wildlifeโ€”are imperiled by habitat destruction. It calls for urbanization to respect and preserve forest lands, so our natural heritage can endure for generations to come.

This costume reimagines Singkil as a princeโ€™s journey rather than a princessโ€™s.

Singkil, a traditional Maranao folk dance from the Philippines, is famed for its intricate footwork as a lead dancer steps in and out of a crisscross of rhythmically clapping bamboo poles.

Historically a royal dance that depicts a princess overcoming obstacles, it has grown to tell romantic chapters from the epic Darangen. This costume flips the script: it casts a noble prince navigating challenges with the same grace, poise, and strategic precision that Singkil dancers bring to the stage, celebrating masculine strength and ceremonial bearing while preserving the danceโ€™s poetic tension and motion.

The ensemble includes an ornate umbrella adorned with hand-painted okir patterns. Okir is the signature Maranao motifโ€”fluid, curving lines and arabesque shapes that weave plant and scroll forms into geometric composition. Traditionally carved, carved-and-painted, or embroidered onto textiles, okir is a visual language of identity and artistry. In this costume, the okir motifs trace along the umbrella and accoutrements, stitching a thread of cultural lineage through color, line, and light.
