YOUNG CONSERVATIONIST🐦

At just nine years old, Gail Lim has already spent two years helping raise awareness and support for one of Cebu’s rarest birds.

Gail first learned about the Cebu Flowerpecker when she was seven. Scientifically known as Dicaeum quadricolor, the bird is found naturally only in Cebu and is classified as Critically Endangered.

After learning how threatened the species had become, Gail told her father that she wanted to do something for a bird living on the same island she called home.

Her family later brought her to the Nug-as Forest in Alcoy, where she met local forest wardens protecting one of the Cebu Flowerpecker’s remaining habitats. The wardens patrol the forest, plant trees and help safeguard the wildlife that still depends on it.

With support from her parents, Gail began working with Cebuano artists, helping organize art workshops, creating custom merchandise and talking to other young people about the Cebu Flowerpecker and wildlife conservation.

Those efforts eventually raised ₱20,000, which Gail donated to the Nug-as Forest Wardens of KMYLBNA, the community protectors helping guard the species’ largest remaining habitat in Alcoy.

Her work also became part of Project Wings and Wonders, an initiative combining art and conservation to introduce more children to Cebu’s native wildlife while supporting those working on the ground to protect it.

The Cebu Flowerpecker has a remarkable history of its own. After decades without a confirmed record and extensive forest loss across Cebu, the species was rediscovered near Tabunan in 1992. More than three decades later, its survival remains closely tied to the protection of the island’s remaining forests.

Gail was only seven when she decided she wanted to help.

Two years later, that concern has already supported the people protecting the Cebu Flowerpecker and introduced more young people to a species found nowhere else on Earth.

Well done, Gail. May your story inspire more young people to care for and protect our wildlife. 💙
