The recent Nepal disaster is a very serious warning for countries with mountains, rivers, and communities near waterwaysโincluding the Philippines. The August 2026 flood was not simply a normal heavy-rain flood. Reports indicate that an ice-and-rock/glacier collapse triggered a massive debris flow and flash flood, rapidly changing river conditions and destroying roads, bridges, homes, and other infrastructure.
What should we learn from Nepal?
1. Don't assume flooding only comes from rain.
Landslides, collapsing glaciers, landslide-dammed rivers, and sudden releases of water can create catastrophic flash floods with very little warning.
2. Early-warning systems must reach ordinary people.
Warnings are useful only if people receive them quickly and know exactly where to evacuate. Nepal has been developing community-based warning systems, including local monitoring and digital alerts.
3. Map dangerous areas before disasters happen.
Governments should identify flood channels, landslide-prone slopes, rivers that can suddenly rise, and communities located in danger zones.
4. Don't build critical infrastructure where one disaster can destroy everything.
Roads, bridges, hospitals, power facilities and settlements need hazard assessments before construction. Nepal's recent disaster showed how the destruction of bridges and roads can also make rescue much harder.
5. Evacuate earlyโnot when the water is already coming.
In a flash flood, waiting to "see how high the water gets" can be fatal. Once an official warning is issued, people should move toward designated higher ground.
6. Prepare for cascading disasters.
One event can trigger another: landslide โ river blockage โ sudden water release โ flash flood โ destroyed roads โ isolated communities. Nepal is still facing risks from unstable terrain and newly formed water bodies.
๐ต๐ญ The lesson for the Philippines
We should not wait for a Nepal-scale disaster before improving our own preparedness. Cebu and other Philippine communities need functioning drainage, protected watersheds, strict control of construction in waterways, river monitoring, effective evacuation routes, and reliable barangay-level warning systems.
The biggest lesson is:
> We cannot always prevent the natural event, but we can prevent a natural event from becoming a massive loss of life through preparation, early warning, proper land-use planning, and fast evacuation.
And importantly, Nepal's disaster should not be used to claim that climate change caused every aspect of the event. Scientists are still investigating the exact chain of causes, although warming is recognized as increasing risks to glaciers and high-mountain environments.
