Road Safety in Gilgit-Baltistan: A Crisis That Cannot Be Ignored
The recent tragic accident is yet another reminder that road safety in Gilgit-Baltistan has reached a critical stage. Sadly, such incidents have become increasingly common, yet very little attention is being paid by the relevant authorities.
Over the past five years, the number of road accidents and fatalities has continued to rise. Despite this alarming trend, there are still no comprehensive safety guidelines, awareness campaigns, emergency response mechanisms, or effective travel advisories for tourists and local communities.
Whether it is the dangerous conditions at Babusar Top during the monsoon season or the tragic incident on the Jaglot-Skardu Road where four tourists from Punjab lost their lives and their bodies were recovered only after four days, the response of the concerned departments has repeatedly exposed serious gaps in preparedness and coordination. In that case, local authorities were reportedly unaware of the incident until relatives raised concerns through social media.
We have also witnessed situations where dozens of vehicles were destroyed by landslides at Babusar Top due to poor communication, lack of timely warnings, and inadequate traffic management. Travelling on the Karakoram Highway and other major roads during rainy weather remains highly risky, with limited emergency support available in case of an accident.
The responsibility lies with both the Tourism Department and Gilgit-Baltistan Police to ensure visitor safety, provide accurate information, strengthen emergency response systems, and implement proper risk management measures. Unfortunately, these issues often receive attention only for a few days before being forgotten.
Today, while administrative attention appears focused on election activities and VIP movements, the safety of ordinary citizens and tourists remains a neglected priority. The victims of these tragedies are soon forgotten by the system, while their families continue to bear the pain for the rest of their lives.
Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the world’s most beautiful tourism destinations. However, without serious investment in road safety, disaster preparedness, tourist protection, and institutional accountability, more lives will continue to be lost unnecessarily.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones. But prayers alone are not enough. It is time for action, responsibility, and reform.
