Noche de San Juan tonight. The patron saint of this city is also the name of the city itself, and the beach a block from At Wind Chimes Boutique Hotel will be busy from sunset until well past midnight. If you have never seen it, the tradition is simple. You walk to the beach in the dark. You stand at the waterline. You fall backward into the warm Caribbean three times, or seven, or twelve. You ask for the year you want.
The neighborhood between Ocean Park and Condado is one of the best stretches of coast for it. Calm water, soft sand, room to spread out a blanket without elbowing the next family for space. Our guests who have been here for the holiday before usually start with an early courtyard-pool evening at the property, walk a few minutes for dinner, then drift toward the beach as the light goes.
If you are staying with us tonight, the front desk knows the best entrance for your room and can hold a bottle of water for you when you come back wet. Tomorrow is San Juan Day proper, so the slow celebration carries into Wednesday.
