A holiday without television

There are no televisions at The Place at Evoramonte. We thought we should warn you.

Instead, we have castle walls, enormous skies, birds riding the thermals and terraces where people still sit and talk to one another. There are books and games in The Snug, local w**e in the honesty bar and enough villages, vineyards and country roads to keep the outside world at a healthy distance.

The Wi-Fi is there when you need it. But you may discover that you do not need it quite as often as you thought.

If your idea of luxury is switching off the noise, looking up from a screen and remembering how long an evening can feel, you may be ready for a few days at The Place.

Wake up to the Alentejo

There are mornings when you wake up and need a few seconds to remember where you are. Room Four at The Place at Evoramonte provides one of them.

The bed looks directly across the valley, so the Alentejo is waiting before you have even put your feet on the floor. Open the doors to your private balcony, breathe in the morning air and watch the light move across a landscape that seems to continue forever.

Room Four also gives you space to settle in properly: a small kitchen, a walk-in shower and a rather splendid four-poster bath.

You can explore all day, return with something good from a local market and enjoy the freedom to make the room feel like your own small home in Portugal.

The view is included. Getting out of bed remains optional.

The Alentejo at walking pace

Some landscapes are best seen through a car window. The countryside around Evoramonte is better discovered slowly and on foot.

Join a guided walk from the village into the surrounding cork-oak forests and olive groves. Along the way, you begin to understand the rhythm of the landscape: ancient trees, old paths, grazing animals, wildflowers and wide skies that seem much larger than they do at home.

Back inside the castle walls, explore Evoramonte's historic streets before returning to The Place. Put your feet up in The Snug, help yourself to something cold and decide whether you have enough energy for dinner on the terrace. We suspect you will.

A walking holiday does not have to mean changing hotels every night. Stay comfortably in one remarkable place and discover a different part of the Alentejo each day.

Three restaurants, three different Alentejo experiences

One of the pleasures of staying at The Place at Evoramonte is that you can eat extremely well without having the same experience twice.

For something local and unpretentious, visit O Emigrante in the village below us, where traditional food is served in a friendly, relaxed setting.

For an Estremoz lunch with a more contemporary feel, try Alecrim and then spend the afternoon exploring the town. When the occasion calls for something particularly special, Casa do Gadanha offers a more refined dining experience in the heart of Estremoz.

And on another evening, do not go anywhere at all. Stay at The Place for homemade pizza, a hamburger with Mitch's South African sauce or a cheese-and-presunto platter, served at seven as the sun begins to descend.

Traditional, contemporary, sophisticated or homemade on the terrace: come hungry and allow yourself several days.

Pottery, a hilltop village and a sky full of stars

For a day that begins with clay and ends among the stars, head south from The Place towards Sao Pedro do Corval.

This is one of Portugal's great pottery villages, where workshops and shops line the streets and you can watch craftspeople turn local clay into the colourful bowls, plates and pots seen across the Alentejo.

Continue to Monsaraz for lunch and an afternoon wandering through its narrow, whitewashed streets. From this hilltop village, the views across the Alqueva landscape seem almost endless.

After dark, join a stargazing session in the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve. Through the telescopes, the night reveals planets, craters, star clusters and galaxies that city lights normally hide.
It makes for a long and memorable day - and gives you three very different versions of the Alentejo: made by hand, seen from above and discovered in the sky.

The Place at Evoramonte makes a peaceful base from which to explore them all.

Discover the story of cork

You see cork everywhere in Portugal, but it becomes much more interesting when you understand where it comes from.

A short journey from The Place takes you into the cork country around Azaruja. At Pepe Aromas, you can explore the cork-oak forest and learn how bark is carefully removed without cutting down or damaging the tree. During the harvesting season, the work is still done by skilled hands using axes and knowledge passed down through generations.

The estate also grows prickly pears and offers experiences exploring how this colourful fruit is cultivated and used. Add a traditional lunch nearby and you have a day combining nature, food, craft and a fascinating part of Portuguese life.

Then return to The Place and look again at the cork oaks scattered across the landscape below. They will no longer be just trees.

Evora deserves more than a rushed stop on the way to somewhere else.

After breakfast at The Place, drive into the city and begin at the Roman Temple. Wander through the historic streets to the cathedral, explore the old centre and then visit the Chapel of Bones, one of Portugal's most memorable - and slightly unsettling - attractions.

Find a small restaurant for lunch, order something properly Alentejano and allow yourself time to sit in one of the squares before exploring a little further.

The best part comes at the end of the afternoon. While other visitors begin searching for their next hotel, you can leave the bustle of the city behind and return to the peace of Evoramonte.

A cold drink, a quiet terrace and a panoramic sunset are a very good way to recover from a full day in a UNESCO World Heritage city.

The vineyard that disappeared underground

Most w**eries make an impression with grand buildings. Herdade do Freixo did something rather more surprising: it placed much of its w**ery underground.

Built on three levels beneath the vineyard, this extraordinary space was designed to protect the surrounding landscape while providing naturally stable conditions for producing and ageing w**e. A guided visit reveals the architecture, the w**emaking process and, most importantly, what all that careful work tastes like.

After the tour and tasting, take a leisurely drive through the countryside around Redondo before returning to Evoramonte.

Back at The Place, pour another glass on the terrace and see if you can identify everything you learned earlier in the day. This is serious research, so you may need a second glass.

With vineyards scattered all around us, The Place at Evoramonte is a very comfortable base for discovering Alentejo w**e.

Our village deserves a day of its own

You do not need to get into the car to begin exploring. Step outside The Place at Evoramonte and you are already inside a historic walled village, directly beside one of the Alentejo's most distinctive castles.

Visit the castle, walk along the old walls and look out across the plains in every direction. Wander down the cobbled street and see how many of Evoramonte's hand-painted stones you can find. Visit the local craft shop, watch traditional work being created and take the time to notice the doors, walls and details that hurried visitors often miss.

Then stroll back to The Place, find a shady table on the terrace and look across the same countryside you have just seen from the castle.

Other people must drive to visit Evoramonte. When you stay with us, it is waiting immediately outside your door.
