In Southern Europe, even noble architecture follows a Mediterranean logic of restraint. From the street, a small castle or palace may appear almost austere: plain façades, simple volumes, whitewashed walls, and few outward signs of “grandeur”. Its distinction is revealed more gradually, through the thickness of the walls, the sequence of rooms, the courtyards, the patios, the light, the shade, and the details found inside. This small château in Évora, known as Casa Morgado Esporão, belongs to this tradition: a building whose elegance is almost invisible from the outside, but discovered as one enters.
