ENGLISH BELOW 🇬🇧

🇬🇧 ENGLISH
Today we recommend to our guests a visit to Almourol Castle, a castle built on a small island in the Tagus River, which is one of the symbols of Templar history and Portuguese national identity.
The defensive fortification is of Roman and Muslim origin, known in the Arab period as Almorolã (Al-morolan = high stone). It is one of the most representative examples of military architecture.
Almourol was conquered in 1129 by the Christian King D. Afonso Henriques. The sovereign handed it over to the Knights Templar, who were then in charge of defending Coimbra, the capital of Portugal at the time.
The 1755 earthquake severely damaged the structure, and it underwent alterations during the Romantic period of the 19th century. It was subject to decorative alterations, including the uniform crowning of the walls with battlements and merlons.
Today, it is possible to visit the castle by boat.
