Today we celebrate Freedom and Democracy!
The 25 de Abril (25th of April, 1974), also known as the Carnation Revolution (Revolução dos Cravos), was a defining moment in Portuguese history that peacefully overthrew the 48-year-old Estado Novo dictatorship.
Organized by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA)—a group of young military officers tired of the Colonial war—the coup began in the early hours of April 25 in Lisbon. The regime collapsed quickly with almost no resistance, as the population took to the streets to support the soldiers with red carnations.
