Every new species we find on the property brings a thrill. Whether it is a plant, a bird, an insect or a mushroom, we love seeing Nature’s bounty, which rewards us unexpectedly when we just let it be. When the species is an enchanting pink butterfly orchid, the excitement levels are that much higher 💕

The story begins in 2018, the year we got a permit to plant our first hectare of vineyard. We picked a spot, cleared it of pine trees, prepared the soil, selected the Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet varieties and by March 2020 we were ready to go. The pandemic meant we could be on the land everyday, planting each vine with utmost care. That year’s first leaves filled us with joy! But it took three more years for the first decent grapes (2023), and the starlings harvested that whole crop…so the following year we had protective nets. By early September 2024 we finally got our hands on over two tons of luscious, sweet grapes. Off to the winery .piteira.amareleja they went! We got our first taste in November and it was delicious 🍷 Another year and the bottles are finally ready, with art from .capucho and a little help from our friends and . This image is from late 2024 but it illustrates an important point. We had spent the day hoping for rain, as we so often do. It was pouring on both sides of us, in Castro Verde and in Mértola, but we got no more than fleeting drops. As we moaned about our bad luck, the afternoon sun came out of the dark rainclouds just above us and put on this incredible show. A double rainbow, more brilliant than any we have ever seen. We stared in awe, overwhelmed by the sheer beauty. Sometimes we don’t get what we want, but rather what we didn’t know we needed 🙏🏻💧☀️ 🌈

Easter is over but egg treasures can still be found around here. While doing maintenance to our pine trees we found this precious nest 🪺 They are probably future blackbirds and we can’t wait to hear them sing!

Spring is in the air - we have seen some wild almonds flowering for a couple of weeks, but the almond tree in our yard waited until it was ready to put on this show 😌

We were hoping for a rain shower today, as there was a thunderstorm nearby and we have had no rain at all for three months! Unfortunately we got no water, but at least there was this colour show.

Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, but back in April, when we started our certification process with Biosphere Sustainable, we didn’t really know what to expect. We learned a lot in the process and we are now proud to share that we are Biosphere Certified! We have registered actions in all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (some have more than others, of course) and we wish to keep improving ☺️

Fancy a snack by the pool? We have two small dipping pools, one is shared by the three double rooms and the other is a private pool for the guests who stay in the Casa da Chaminé (Villa). In the Villa’s kitchen you can prepare full meals or lighter refreshments.

It may be hot outside but that doesn’t mean you have to lounge by the pool all day. If you want to explore the property, why not get out early when there is a cool morning breeze? You can walk or use our bikes: they are free for guests staying with us!

Algarvia goats are resilient animals who can feed on almost any plant. They have adapted well to our place. Occasionally we bring them Tagasaste prunings, but here we tried some thorny bougainvillea. They seemed to enjoy it!

Hopefully, our first peach harvest is a sign of what to expect as the orchard comes into its own. Out of three small trees we got over 6kg of peaches. The first ones we picked, last week, were tasty but still rather green. We were afraid the birds would get to them before we did. We needn’t have fretted…Today the peaches are ripe and the sweetness is unbelievable. The birds only pecked a couple, so there is plenty left for us and our guests!

Breakfast is one of our favorite meals! Today we have home-made kefir with home-made lemon curd and tasty backyard strawberries. The chia seeds sprinkled on top are store-bought 😉
