Fisherman's Retreat Pico

You couldn't be closer to the water's edge in our self-catering suites at the head of a slipway and old historic port, now exclusively recreational.

Get the authentic local experience when staying in a traditional Azorean house that was once a fish factory located on the waterfront of a small fishing harbour Porto do Calhau on the west coast of Pico island, Azores. Whether your choice is bathing in the warm, clear, Gulf Stream waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, fishing, diving or boating, it is all available right at your door! We are positioned in the UNESCO protected area, right at the starting point of a popular hiking trail that meanders through the UNESCO designated, historic, rock-walled, Verdelho wine growing area. The main town of Madalena is just 7 kilometers away where 2 supermarkets, museums, restaurants, bars and local shops can be found. For the more adventurous, the imposing Pico Mountain, the highest in Portugal at 2,351 meters, offers climbers the opportunity to climb a classic volcanic 'cone' and from the summit have the unsurpassed view of the entire central group of islands.
