The year kicks off in Seixal with Madeira’s first big “arraial” (street festival)! 🌿✨
From January 16th to 18th, our village celebrates the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot (Santo Antão), the patron saint of animals. Did you know this is one of our island’s most cherished traditions?
But there’s a special detail that makes it all more magical: the scent of Laurel (Loureiro). This tree, which gave its name to our UNESCO Laurissilva forest, is the "soul" of our festivals. Traditionally used to decorate the streets and as skewers for our famous espetada, the laurel connects us directly to Madeira’s true identity.
If you are staying at Madeira Black Sand Beach House, you can't miss: Live music and the lively atmosphere of the "barracas" (food & drink stalls) until 3 AM! The arrival of traditional philharmonic brass bands. The solemn Mass and religious Procession on Sunday (Jan 18th).
