Some rooms reveal themselves slowly.

In Le Diplomate, the marble fireplace and the oval painting have been part of the hotel since its opening in 1914. They first stood in Les Colonnades and moved to the salon in the 1960s.

Look closer, and the details begin to speak: bronze atlantes in the guise of Hercules, named after the Titan who held up the heavens; gilded mascarons crowned with roses; Ionic volutes picked out in gold. Above it all rises a stained-glass dome of white roses, designed for an age before microphones, so that a single voice beneath its centre could fill the entire salon.
