Actually you will come to the little village of Liehittäjä when arriving to Huuva Hideaway! We, the "crew" are Pia, Henry and daughter Maja and our best Chef and Activity Guide; Emilia. Because she is like one of the family. (Násti means "Star" in norht Saami language)

The midnight sun season is slowly returning here in the north of Sweden… ☀️

The light is back, from the early morning hours until late at night. At this time of year, the sun barely sets. The forests are green, the birds are singing, and it’s quiet - but sometimes you can hear Henry playing his accordion on the porch.

This is a special time of the year in Arctic Sweden. The days seem endless, the evenings stretch on a little longer, and darkness never quite arrives.

Have you ever celebrated Swedish Midsummer… for real? 🇸🇪🌸

Not the postcard version.
The come as you are, join the family, eat good food, laugh a little, sing even if you don’t know the words kind of Midsummer.

On June 19 and June 21, we invite a small number of guests to celebrate with us at Huuva Hideaway - a Sámi family home in the Torne Valley, in Arctic Sweden.

We’ll make flower crowns, decorate the Midsummer pole with leaves and flowers, sing, dance, share stories and gather around a summery ”smörgåsbord” with local flavors, and a little Sámi touch, of course.

Midsummer is all about light, food, family and togetherness.

We would be happy to share this small-scale and genuine Midsummer celebration with you this year, wherever you come from!
Maybe a reason to travel north?! 🌞

And yes, according to old folklore, seven flowers under your pillow on Midsummer night may make you dream of your future love 🌸

Some clothes carry more than colours and patterns ❤️💙💛💚

They carry stories.
About family, place, belonging, craft — and the people who wore them before us.

In Sápmi, traditional clothing is never “just a costume”. It tells something about where you come from, your area, family traditions, identity and sometimes also personal style. Colours, details, length and shape can vary across Sápmi — from north to south, between families and generations.

Daughter Maja Huuva & Henry are wearing the Jukkasjärvi Gakti (Sámi dress) and grandson Jovnna Simma Huuva is wearing the Karesuando Gakti.
Anna-Lena Kaati, who is the host at Kaatis Reindeer and moose, and being the “reindeer & moose mama” is wearing a summer Jukkasjärvi Gakti.

Here, in the Torne Valley, there is also other traditional dressed; with its green tones, floral shawl and beautiful details. A dress connected to Tornedalian culture, everyday life, celebration and pride in this place we call home. Birgit Furmark and Ella Lindahl are wearing the traditional Torne Valley dress.

We love how these photos show both: Sámi clothing and the Torne Valley dress, side by side. Different stories, different traditions — but both deeply connected to land, people and heritage.

Sometimes people ask us where to experience Sámi culture. Our answer is: not in one single place, but through people, homes, stories, food and through the seasons.

Sámi culture lives in families, landscapes, traditions, memories and in the rhythm of the eight seasons ❄️🌿☀️🍂

Around us, in northern Sweden, many small-scale Sámi businesses welcome guests in their own personal way. Through reindeer, nature, food, craft, storytelling or family traditions.

At Huuva Hideaway, we share our culture in the way that feels most natural to us,

The beginning of May.
Snow melting. Birds singing. Fire crackling.
Sausage on sticks, coffee by the fire, family, laughter and songs with the guitar.

The ice on the lake is slowly letting go, the light is golden, and spring is finally arriving here in the Arctic.

And, if you listen carefully, you might hear the black grouse playing on the nearby mires…

Still a little winter. Almost summer. Completely wonderful.

We are enjoying the season.

Here in the north, spring-winter has quietly turned into spring. April is never in a hurry to decide - one day the sun feels almost warm enough for summer and the snow begins to disappear, the next day the air is full of rain… or even snow.

This is also the season of firewood.
The wood that will warm us next winter has already started its journey: from the forest, to the yard, to the saw, the axe and the woodpile. It will dry through the long light of summer, waiting for the cold to return.

In between the wood-work, small moments of joy - like Násti the dog, happily playing and testing the icy crust in the ditches, as if spring was made just for her 😎

Duodji is the Sámi word for traditional handicraft 👉🧵🪶

In North Sámi: Duodji
South Sámi: Vætnoe (duedtie)
Lule Sámi: Duodje
Pite Sámi: Duojje
Ume Sámi: Duöjjie

It’s often translated as “traditional craft” - but it is so much more. Duodji is knowledge made visible.

Every object has a purpose. Materials come from nature - birch roots, antler, leather, wood 🌿🪵
Nothing unnecessary was made back then. Each piece had to endure transportation, climate and time.

To ”practise” duodji is to listen and learn, understand the material, the function and responsibility.
It’s slow knowledge, carried across generations 🪶

When you hold duodji, you hold generations of Sámi knowledge in your hands! 😉💚

In Sámi culture, nothing is wasted. This is not a slogan - it is survival 🔥

Meat becomes nourishment. Skin becomes clothing and shoes. Bone and antlers become tools and craft. Dried blood becomes food for long winter journeys.

Every part has a purpose. Every part has value.

Reindeer blood can be preserved, dried, and later turned into nourishing meals - like the Bloodlinies we serve at Huuva Hideaway 🍽️

What others might see as scraps are carefully reused - shaped into something both useful and beautiful.

Today, sustainability is widely discussed. In Sámi life, it has always been a natural part of everyday living 🌿

Because when you live close to nature, you take only what you need - and care for what remains. We call it Sámi Philosophy.

And around the table, as meals are shared, this philosophy is still alive - in every dish we serve 💚
