Mother's Day
In Thailand, National Mother's Day falls on August 12th every year, coinciding with the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. This day is a public holiday allowing children to show gratitude to their mothers, and also an opportunity to celebrate Her Majesty and participate in activities beneficial to society.
Historical Background
The first celebration of Mother's Day in Thailand took place on March 10, 1943, organized by the Ministry of Public Health at Amporn Garden. However, the event was interrupted by World War II. After the war, the government under Field Marshal Plaek Phibulsongkram designated April 15th of each year as National Mother's Day, starting in 1950. However, due to the lack of main sponsorship from the National Cultural Council, the event was discontinued again.
Finally, in 1976, the Executive Committee of the National Council of Social Welfare of Thailand under Royal Patronage established a new National Mother's Day, choosing the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, as the official date. Her Majesty Queen Sirikit's 12th August has been officially designated as National Mother's Day ever since, in honor of her role as the mother of the nation.
Traditions and Celebrations
On National Mother's Day, Thais traditionally offer garlands of pure white jasmine flowers to their mothers as a sign of respect, love, and filial piety. Nationally, the Thai national flag is displayed alongside a blue flag bearing the royal monogram "S.K." on buildings and government offices. In the morning, merit-making ceremonies are held to honor Her Majesty. In the evening, people and organizations across the country light candles in unison to offer blessings and best wishes to Her Majesty.
