👭📣📣Healthy Vibe📢📢
Buak Haad Public Park (locally known as Suan Buak Haad) is a historic park located inside the old city moat of Chiang Mai at the southwestern corner (Jaeng Ku Hueang). Built on a 700-year-old royal reservoir commissioned by King Mengrai, it holds the distinction of being the only public park within the Old City square. Spanning about 12 rai (4.7 acres), this lush green space is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to relax, exercise, or enjoy a lakeside picnic. It also serves as the main venue for major city events like the annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival.
🌿What to Do & Experience
• Daily Wellness: I highly recommend dropping by for "Yoga in the Park Chiang Mai". They host morning Hatha sessions around 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM (you can rent yoga mats at the park's kiosk for a tiny fee). If you visit closer to sunset around 6:00 PM, you'll catch energetic public aerobics and community groups playing Sepak Takraw (traditional kick volleyball) or Tai Chi.
• Low-Cost Picnics: You can rent a straw mat from the front gates for just 15–30 Baht. It is the perfect setup to lounge on the grass by the ornamental ponds and read a book.
• Family & Wildlife: Kids love using the modern playground. You can also buy bags of fish food from the white bridges to feed the active koi carp and pigeons.
• The Fitness Loop: Joggers can take advantage of a clean, dedicated rubberized running track forming a loop of roughly 440 to 600 meters around the park, complete with free outdoor gym equipment along the way.
🎉Festivals & Seasonal Magic
The park undergoes incredible transformations based on the time of year:
• The Flower Festival (February): This is the park's absolute crown jewel event. Every February, it turns into a vibrant botanical wonderland packed with large flower sculptures, orchid competitions, and specialized plant markets. Note that it sometimes closes briefly in late January or early February to prepare for the massive displays.
• Loy Krathong & Yi Peng (November): The park serves as a beautifully lit central celebration site. Its serene lakes are illuminated at night by hundreds of floating candlelit krathongs.
Practical Visitor Tips
• Amenities: There are free public toilets, a small shop selling water or snacks, and an onsite café serving delicious iced chocolate.
• Getting There: If you travel by car, be aware that there is no formal parking lot on-site, meaning you'll need to secure paid or free street parking nearby. A much easier alternative is to hop onto a Songthaew (local red truck) or catch the local B2/Line-10 bus right to the southwest moat corner.
