Do you know the story of İstiklal Street? The avenue, which is one of the most vibrant spots in İstanbul today, was known during the Ottoman period as Cadde-i Kebir, meaning the “Grand Avenue”. With the opening of embassies, theatres, patisseries, shops, and grand passages in the 19th century, the avenue transformed into one of the cultural and social life centres of İstanbul. Following the proclamation of the Republic, the avenue was named İstiklal Street. From that day to this, even though its buildings, storefronts, and regulars have changed, this historical path stretching from Tünel to Taksim continues to carry the memory of İstanbul. Richmond İstanbul, on the other hand, has been right at the heart of this story for years.

İstiklal Caddesi’nin hikâyesini biliyor musunuz?
Bugün İstanbul’un en hareketli noktalarından biri olan cadde, Osmanlı döneminde Cadde-i Kebir, yani “Büyük Cadde” adıyla biliniyordu. 19. yüzyılda elçiliklerin, tiyatroların, pastanelerin, mağazaların ve gösterişli pasajların açılmasıyla cadde, İstanbul’un kültür ve sosyal yaşam merkezlerinden birine dönüştü. Cumhuriyet’in ilanından sonra ise caddeye İstiklal Caddesi adı verildi. O günden bugüne binaları, vitrinleri ve müdavimleri değişse de Tünel’den Taksim’e uzanan bu tarihi yol, İstanbul’un hafızasını taşımaya devam ediyor.
