Today, Uganda mourns the loss of His Majesty Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the King of Tooro.
For those of us in tourism, his passing is deeply felt.
King Oyo was a passionate advocate for the beauty and potential of Tooro—from the majestic Rwenzori Mountains to its forests, crater lakes, culture and communities. He understood the power of tourism to showcase the region to the world.
We remember a King who understood that Tooro's natural and cultural heritage was not only something to protect, but something to share with the world.
His involvement in initiatives such as the King Oyo Rwenzori Royal Expedition helped shine a light on mountain tourism, conservation and the importance of protecting the region's natural heritage.
At Great Lakes Safaris & Collection, we are grateful for his contribution to promoting a region we are proud to share with travellers from around the world.
Our thoughts are with the Batooro, the Royal Family, the Tooro Kingdom and all Ugandans during this difficult time.
May his legacy continue to inspire the protection and celebration of Tooro's people, culture and natural heritage.
Rest in peace, Your Majesty. 🕊️
