How did we come up with the name? Many things in life seem to happen for a specific reason. As the owners of a canvas manufaturing company for the past 15 years, we thought it a coincidence when we bought the building that the last business to operate in the building was also a sewing company. After a bit more research, we found that not only did T S Langford & Sons occupy the building, but so did Abilene Shade and Awning and Fairy Form Lingerie. We immediately saw the common denominator for many of the tenants of this building over the past century. And then the light bulb went off......

It seems only fitting that in the year of it's 100 year anniversary, The renovation of the Fulwiler Building at 159 Walnut will begin. Plans for the bldg include lofts on the upper floors and mixed use space on the bottom floor. Follow along with us on our journey!

The building at 159 Walnut was constructed in 1922 by local businessman and developer W.J. Fulwiler. It housed a moving or transfer and storage company along with Swift Company, a meat distributor, and T.S. Langford and Sons Clothing Manufacturing.
Fulwiler purchased the lots for 159 Walnut in 1921 from Henry Sayles and, subsequently, purchased the lots for 173 Walnut Street the next year. He initially was going to erect a one story building for tractors and implements at 159 Walnut Street but soon changed to a larger building. He leased 159 Walnut to a variety of companies over the years including Swift Meat Company, Armour Meat Company and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company on the first floor and T.S. Langford and Sons Garment Company, Abilene Shade and Awning, Fairy Form Lingerie and Lemon and
Sheperd Wholesale Confectioners Company. Fulwiler had purchased the adjacent three lots which were developed
later, in the late 1920s to early 1930s. A fire occurred in the building on July 10, 1925 which did extensive damage. A portion of the north wall collapsed and the interior was badly damaged. It took all of the Abilene fire fighters and several volunteers to quell the fire. The building was rebuilt as can be seen by the brick type visible on the third floor. The Fulwiler building is an example of a commercial design influenced by the Chicago School of Architecture.
The building’s primary facade exhibits the characteristics of the Chicago Commercial style with restrained cast
stone ornamentation.
