The Indigo House is the perfect staycation getaway for you and your pup. Just a short drive from Washington, DC, Maryland, West Virginia, and North Carolina, The Indigo House is a modern B&B with convenient access to Charlottesville, Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Wintergreen, and the area’s best vineyards and breweries. I bet a little roadtrip like this from Roanoke, Richmond, Raleigh or Virginia Beach is less expensive than a flight to California wine country.

It was really fun to share with the camera crew about what makes Nelson County so special!

Start your morning here at the Indigo with locally roasted coffee in bed, a farm-to-fork breakfast, and plenty of fresh mountain air. Go for a hike and spend your afternoon touring the incredible breweries and wineries- Nothing is super fancy and you can still have a date night for $50. Grab a casual dinner out while you listen to local live music. If it can be fermented, fried, sandwiched, or pizza-ed, we’re doing it here.

Wind down at the end of the night with a board game, a new book, a drink by the fire pit, or stargazing. Our sweet, national park-inspired rooms accommodate two adults and come stocked with the essential items for a luxurious stay. It’s a perfect, cozy staycation for you, your favorite person, and your pup!

Save this for your next getaway🚙

It was honestly so cool and much lower pressure than I was expecting. The crew was awesome and patient with us. They really wanted to to help us share the story of how we became innkeepers, why we left corporate America to build and operate our own bed and breakfast. and what make the Indigo House the best dog-friendly staycation. I can’t wait to see the footage and hope this exposure brings us more guests who love coffee, road trips, hiking, and eating a good pizza with a great beer and a gorgeous view.

Even reactive dogs should go on vacation, right?

I think so! Sure, you may need to consider some extra things to meet the needs of your dog, but pet-friendly travel should accommodate reactive dogs too. And because I believe all dogs deserve to adventure in the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains with their person, I’m sharing my tips for how to stay at the Indigo House, a modern bed and breakfast for outdoorsy humans and kind dogs.

🏠Book the Zion room and request an early check in and/or late check out to avoid passing contact with other dogs. The Zion room is upstairs and has a semi-private staircase with easy access to the the yard. Pro tip: The weekdays tend to have fewer dogs and are quieter!
🐾Hike less popular trails like Lower Shamokin (waterfall) or Dripping Rock South (mountain views). You can also explore the Rockfish Valley trails because they offer interconnected loops and you can avoid crossing paths with other dogs.
🥪Grab a meal to go at Greenwood Grocery, a local roadside BBQ joint, or Belties and enjoy it with your pup at one of the overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We also love the Founders Overlook in Wintergreen for a picnic because the dog traffic tends to be pretty low and the views are gorgeous!
🚙Grab a pup cup from Belties (they have a drive through!), wander around the antique store, or go for a drive on Skyline in Shenandoah National Park.

We’ve been fostering a dog (who had a traumatic past) for about 3 months now. He has settled in emotionally and physically so well but sometimes there are moments of reactivity. In addition to the above, we try and get out during less peak times to avoid crowds. Nothing beats a picnic at the Indigo while all the other guests are out exploring. I am far from an expert on traveling with a reactive dog, so drop your favorite tips in the comments! I’d love to learn how you adventure together 🐾

Celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with us! New here? Welcome to the Indigo House, a modern bed and breakfast for outdoorsy humans and kind dogs. We’re is the perfect staycation getaway for you and your pup. I bet a little roadtrip like this from Roanoke, Richmond, Raleigh or Virginia Beach is less expensive than a flight this 4th of July.

Enjoy a limited edition Liberty Hollow Ale upon arrival. On Saturday, explore Wintergreen’s 4th of July Jubilee (live music, ax-throwing, fireworks) with free scenic chairlift ride tickets*. And the fun doesn’t stop there! Our Founding Foragers VA250 passport trail takes you through the farms, orchards, cideries, and vineyards of Virginia’s Blue Ridge - the same ones that fueled American independence 250 years ago. On Sunday, enjoy breakfast and then linger a little longer with a late checkout.

*No dogs allowed on the chairlift.

Rock climbing, horseback riding, and fly fishing can be arranged for an additional cost if you want to add on a day for even more adventure!

There’s something so magical about a romantic backyard wedding. I suppose, in a way, Indigo micro weddings have always proved that good things really do come in small packages 🥂

Discover this 2ish-mile out-and-back trail near The Indigo House! It’s one of the closest waterfall trails to the Indigo, making it perfect for hikers and dogs alike who want to explore falls, but not spend all day driving to see them. This one is short and sweet, a bit of a local’s trail, and very popular with families on the weekends.

Generally considered a moderately challenging route, this trail hits all the highlights for me:
🐾Dog Friendly
🌄Mostly shaded
⌚️Perfect any time of day
🕺Not too crowded
🏠Close to
🧍‍♀️Feels safe for a solo hike
🚙Under 2 hours of hike+transportation time

📍Paul’s Creek

At a little over 300 feet of elevation, this quiet trail offers abundant water access without having to really work for it. You’ll park in a residential area, so please be respectful of the kind humans who actually live near the trail! If the cul-de-saq is too full for parking, then go a little further up the road to the Lower Shamokin or the Camille trailheads for water-based routes.

Pro Tip: This trail can get pretty ticky in the spring. Do a tick check for you and your dog(s) after you hike.

Save this for your next visit to Nelson County Virginia!
