Need a quieter, greener escape near Albuquerque? Corrales Bosque Preserve (Andrews Ln) is a favorite for easy walks under cottonwoods along the Rio Grande.

You’ll wander bosque trails that follow acequia and irrigation-ditch paths, with that classic Corrales “rural village” feel—fields, mature trees, and big Sandia Mountain views that make golden hour especially worth it.

Quick tip: if you head out with a water bottle, note the hydrant line near the bosque is marked non-potable (for firefighting), so plan your drinking water accordingly.

Albuquerque’s Route 66 story isn’t tucked away in a museum—it runs right down Central Avenue.

Route 66 was established in 1926, and when it was rerouted in 1937 onto a more direct east–west path, it turned Central into the city’s main travel spine—lighting up the “Mother Road” with motels, neon, diners, and unforgettable roadside architecture.

Here’s the fun detail most people miss: the intersection of Central Ave and Fourth St is where Route 66 effectively “crosses itself” in Albuquerque—before 1937 travelers came in on Fourth, and after the shift they rolled straight down Central. One crossroads, two eras of the same highway.

Central Avenue still carries about an 18-mile continuous stretch of historic Route 66—often recognized as the longest urban segment of the Mother Road in the U.S.—and it threads through Albuquerque’s iconic neighborhoods like Old Town, Downtown, and Nob Hill (hello, neon).
