Alex City, we have a question.

We bought the building at 163 Alabama Street with no idea what it used to be. The brick above the windows still said ORTHODONTICS. Inside it was a shell — steel columns, old brick, ninety years of dust.

We kept the brick and built a home inside. Today: twelve seats, crystal butterflies, same brick walls.

But we want the full story. That's why we started Alex City Memories — collecting the history of downtown, one memory at a time, starting with our own building.

You know the front of our building as Phoenix Physical Therapy. Downtown Dreaming is the back half, behind the clinic. Before the therapists, the front was an orthodontist: when the Phoenix sign went up, the old brick beside it still said ORTHODONTICS. Who was the doctor? We bought a building on Alabama Street with no idea what it used to be. So we started digging.

Alexander City burned to the ground on a Friday the 13th in 1902 and rebuilt itself in brick the same year. The same spring, a 26-year-old started a knitting mill with six machines. A generation later, the valleys south of town filled into the largest man-made lake in the world. Our building went up at the end of the 1930s in the middle of all of it.

We are starting a project called Alex City Memories to collect the town's stories, one at a time: the mills, the Strand, the lake, the people. First chapter: our own building, and a ghost sign on the brick we cannot explain yet.
