Today is the first day of Washington State's PaddleSafe Week. At Blue Otter Outfitters we encourage safe paddling habits for everyone out there who enjoys dipping a blade in the water. It should seem obvious, but there are plenty of people out here in the San Juan Islands who head out in a kayak or a paddleboard without taking simple safety precautions such as wearing a life jacket. If you are going to be heading out on the water please remember this elemental piece of safety equipment, it could save your life.

Stand up paddle boarding, and sit-on-top kayak rentals are now available in Anacortes! We are having our "soft opening" this weekend during the Waterfront Festival. Come on down to Seafarer's Memorial Park, next to Cap Sante Marina, and escape the heat! Hourly rentals available.

Transient (mammal-eating) killer whales have been spotted in Rosario Strait several times in the last few days. Yesterday there was a dozen of them up by Blakely Island, and several more down at the south end. It's a good time to get out on the water, lots to see! Give us a call!

Paleontologists have published a description of the first dinosaur fossil from Washington state. The fossil was collected along the shores of Sucia Island State Park in the San Juan Islands.

Wow, check out this article from the Huffington Post!
According to Global Yodel, Anacortes is one of the most underrated cities in the United States. I'd say that I have to agree. With our amazing shorelines, huge ACFL forestlands park, stable economy, and convenient location, we have it pretty darned good out here!

Along the way we've discovered some incredible places that rarely make the top destination lists compiled by traditional travel media. So we decided to start a series dedicated to promoting the world's most underrated cities....

After a questionable forecast the weather turned out to be excellent yesterday. It rained in the morning, but in the afternoon the Sun came out and created an amazing light show reflecting off of the flat calm water.
We had reports from our kayakers that there were dozens (yes, dozens!) of Harbor porpoise cavorting off of the west side of Burrows Island. The currents were runny quite strong today and so they sat at the lighthouse waiting for things to subside so that they could return to our office safely. Good choice!

Wow, after a long (but fun) hard ride we finally have finished the Blue Otter Outfitters website! Although we've been offering rentals for over a month now, it finally feels "official". Now the work of promoting the business can begin in earnest!

We've been enjoying some amazing weather this spring, and it looks like summer is going to be the same way!
