Get to know the owner!!

o Lynn Fillenwarth is the current owner and operator of Fillenwarth Beach. She is a third generation Fillenwarth. After over 40 years of practicing law, she took over at the helm of the resort. In her words, she says she is now ‘practicing resort, while still practicing law’.
o Lynn’s favorite ‘job’ at the resort is sailing her 28’ racing E Scow. When she is not sailing, you can find her in the office, hosting the gatherings and out on the property getting to know her valued guests.
o Lynn’s hobbies outside of the resort include traveling, fine dining and spending time with her husband and black lab.
o Lynn honors her family’s legacy by consistent operation of the resort. She is dedicated to surrounding herself with top-notch associates, to updating units and repair/improvement to infrastructure, continually evolving with the times while keeping the sparkle of nostalgia alive. She has a goal of the resort thriving for generations to come.

A little history of Fillenwarth Beach!

o 1919, resort operation began when A.T. Fillenwarth saw a demand for lakeside cottage rentals.
o 1920s/1930s, A.T. continued the expansion of the resort through acquisition of property in the area. Ken Fillenwarth was born in 1924 in Old Faithful, the original cottage.
o 1940s, Ken attended law school where he met and married the love of his life, Ruth.
o 1950s, Lynn and Julie were born, as the start of the third generation resort operators. Beginning in the 1950s, Ken brought the resort to life through modernizing cottages and through his love of boating, he began recreation at the resort by taking his guests out on boat rides.
o 1960s, construction of the Main office building was completed. Ken built the current chateau units after a tornado devastated the original 7 cabins. Ken was the driving force behind what makes the resort what it is today. His quirky personality was sure to delight guests of all types. The resort was his life, and he lived it to full capacity.
o 1970s/1980s, A.T. died and Ken built the indoor pool. The family acquired the South Beach and Cottage Colony areas.
o 1990s, Sun Runners were acquired and recreation program came to fruition. Julie began her full-time position at the resort (while still practicing law part-time). She vastly expanded recreation at the resort, took updating of units to the next level and was passionate about customer service. Along with her many talents at the resort, she was an influence to countless people and extremely generous with her time volunteering with various organizations. She left an impact on the resort that can be felt to this day.
o 2000s-current time, deaths of Ruth, Ken and Julie. The resort continues to evolve, with Lynn at the helm. Lynn’s overall goal for the resort is to keep the nostalgia alive, while staying relevant to current and prospective guests for generations to come.

We have been BUSY! Some may think, ‘you are closed, now what do you do all off season’? Well, let us tell you, there is A LOT of work done behind the scenes to close and reopen a resort!

Our staff have been diligently working to deep clean units, pull boats out of the water and plank by plank remove all of our docks.

Sweet dreams to our boats while they rest for the winter.

Our season officially came to an end on Sunday. We are infinitely grateful to all of those who chose to stay with us and made magical memories!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to our staff, vendors, contractors, etc for making this truly a ‘home away from home’ for so many guests.

Thank you again for making Fillenwarth Beach truly ‘more than a place to stay’. Peace out summer ’26!

Ding ding ding!!! Last call!

Anyone need one last trip to Fillenwarth before we close for the 2026 season? Make those calls today.

The early fall weather is our favorite and while you are here, you can visit the Clay County Fair just one county south of us. There is something for everyone to see! Then swing back to catch the last Sun Runner cruise of the season.

Our last night for rent will be Saturday, September 19th. Don’t miss out!

We need your help! We need your answers to some of the questions we get at the resort. We also have a few of our own that need to be answered.

1. Where is your favorite place to visit other than Fillenwarth while you are in Okoboji?
2. Where is your favorite place to watch/listen to live music?
3. What is your favorite "oddity" in Okoboji that you like to see? (i.e. goat island)
4. Where is your favorite place to eat in Okoboji?
5. What is your favorite boat ride while at Fillenwarth Beach?
6. What do you look forward to the most when coming to Fillenwarth Beach?

Looking to catch a big one? Don’t forget your fishing pole on your next trip! Our angler guests recommend fishing near our boat hoists as the fish LOVE to live there. Make a memory by having your son, daughter, grandchild, or great grandchild catch their first fish right off our docks.

Also, during our full season, be sure to catch our Kids’ Fishing Clinic on Tuesday mornings. We have a fishing pro come in to teach the basics and then put your skills to the test. It is one of our favorite activities of the week! Only offered during full season. The Iowa Guide service
