Y para convertirlo en una escapada de varios días, The Cardinal’s Nest in the Smokies, en Waynesville, es un punto perfecto para explorar esta parte de Western North Carolina. 🏡❤️

🏔️❤️ ¿Solo tienes UN día para conocer Great Smoky Mountains?

🍁⛰️ Wondering WHEN to plan your Western North Carolina fall getaway? This is your sign to start planning!

One of the most amazing things about fall in the mountains is that peak color doesn’t happen everywhere at the same time. Because of the different elevations, autumn color usually works its way down the mountains—giving us weeks of opportunities to chase those reds, oranges and golden yellows. 😍🍂

Higher elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway often begin changing first, followed by mid-elevation mountain towns and eventually the valleys.

That means you can plan days around:

🍁 Scenic drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway
🥾 Fall hikes with incredible mountain views
💦 Waterfalls surrounded by autumn color
🫎 Elk watching in the Smokies
🎃 Exploring Waynesville and nearby mountain towns
🌅 Chasing those unforgettable fall sunsets

✍️ Remember: Fall color dates are always estimates. Elevation, temperature, rainfall and weather conditions can shift peak color from year to year—so flexibility is part of the adventure!

🏡 And The Cardinal’s Nest in the Smokies in Waynesville makes a wonderful home base for chasing the changing colors. You can explore different elevations during the day, then come home to beautiful mountain views and relax in the hot tub on a crisp fall evening. ♨️🍁

💦⛰️ One of Western North Carolina’s prettiest waterfalls is hiding just off the scenic route!

📍 Soco Falls | near Cherokee & Maggie Valley, NC

What makes Soco Falls so special? It’s a beautiful double waterfall, where two cascades tumble through the lush mountain forest and meet below. 🌲💦 And you don’t need to commit to a long hike to see it!

A short walk from the parking area takes you to the main observation deck, making this an easy waterfall stop to add to a day exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee, Maggie Valley, or the Great Smoky Mountains. ❤️

🍂 And just imagine it surrounded by fall color!

⚠️ A little tip: The main overlook is the safest place to enjoy the view. There is a steeper path beyond it, but conditions can be slippery and muddy, especially after rain—so don’t feel like you need to go farther to enjoy this beautiful waterfall.

🏡 And here’s one of the BEST parts if you’re staying at The Cardinal’s Nest in the Smokies—Soco Falls is only about 15 minutes away! 😍

That means you can wake up at the cabin, grab your coffee, chase a waterfall, drive the Parkway, explore Cherokee, look for elk, and still be back in time for an evening soak in the hot tub. ♨️🌄

🫎🍂 One of the most incredible sounds of fall in the Smokies is about to begin… the bugle of a bull elk! ❤️

September and October bring elk rutting season to the Great Smoky Mountains, and it’s one of the most fascinating wildlife experiences you can witness in Western North Carolina.

During the rut, the massive bull elk become much more active as they compete for females. You may see them gathering harems, challenging other bulls—and hear those unforgettable bugling calls echoing through the mountains. 🫎⛰️

📍 Where to look: Cataloochee Valley and the Oconaluftee area are two popular places on the North Carolina side of the Smokies to watch for elk.

🌅 Early morning and late afternoon/evening can be great times for wildlife viewing.

⚠️ Please give them plenty of space. Rutting bulls can be especially unpredictable. Use binoculars or a zoom lens, never approach or feed an elk, and follow all National Park Service wildlife-distance rules. ❤️

🏡 Staying at The Cardinal’s Nest in the Smokies in Waynesville puts you in a wonderful location for an autumn getaway filled with elk watching, fall foliage, the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls and mountain adventures. 🍁

And after an evening listening for elk bugles? Come back to the cabin, climb into the hot tub and enjoy a quiet Smoky Mountain night. ♨️✨

🫎⛰️ The majestic elk of the wild side of the Smokies… what a sight! ❤️

There’s something unforgettable about seeing these incredible animals roaming freely against the backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains. Moments like this remind you just how wild and beautiful Western North Carolina really is. 🌲

Around Cataloochee Valley and the Oconaluftee area, you may be lucky enough to spot elk grazing in the fields or wandering near the forest. And as fall approaches, the bulls become even more impressive as rut season begins and their bugling echoes through the mountains. 🍂🫎

📸 Bring your camera or binoculars, but always admire them from a safe distance. Elk are wild, powerful animals—never approach or feed them.
