Did you know McInteer Villa was contracted to be built in 1889? However, construction began in 1890.

The home was commissioned by John McInteer, a successful Atchison businessman who built a prominent career in the saddle, harness, and leather trade.

By the late 1880s, McInteer had become one of the area’s most successful businessmen and began planning a substantial new residence for his family.

When he was unable to purchase a lot in Atchison’s exclusive old-money neighborhood, McInteer instead selected a highly visible corner of town and hired master contractor Owen E. Seip to construct his new home.

Completed in 1890 at a cost of approximately $14,000 (roughly $500,000 today), McInteer Villa became a striking example of Queen Anne architecture and an important part of Atchison’s architectural history.

More than a century later, the home remains a recognizable landmark, and its story continues to be preserved today.

Beneath McInteer Villa’s iconic turret sits one of the mansion’s most distinguished guest rooms: the McInteer Suite.

Named for original owner John McInteer, the entrepreneur and saddle manufacturer who built the home, the spacious suite offers a direct connection to the villa’s earliest history.

Located on the second floor at the top of the grand staircase, the room features striking canted bay windows, abundant natural light, and sweeping views of Atchison’s historic hilltop neighborhoods.

Historic preservation takes work, but keeping the McInteer Villa standing strong makes every bit worth it! ✨

When we took a closer look at the historic windows here, we realized just how much love they really needed.

Decades of Kansas weather had taken their toll—panes were cracked, warped with age, or missing entirely. Protecting the Villa while staying true to its original character was a massive priority for us.

A huge thank you to the incredible team who stepped up to help us tackle this project! 🛠️

They carefully replaced the damaged glass throughout the home using a mix of blue chip pattern glass and clear glass, giving our beautiful windows a vibrant, beautifully refreshed look.

Thanks to their skill and craftsmanship, the Villa is secure, stunning, and ready for decades to come.

For more than a century, the McInteer Villa has stood overlooking Atchison. ☀️

The city around it has changed. Generations have come and gone. Businesses have opened and closed. Neighborhoods have grown.

Yet each evening, the setting sun casts its final light across the same brick walls that have stood since 1890.

Historic homes like McInteer Villa remind us that while the world is always changing, some places continue quietly carrying the stories of those who came before us.

Every sunset marks another day in the life of the Villa, and another opportunity to preserve its history for those who will one day stand here after us.

Because history isn’t only found in books. Sometimes it’s found in the places that have watched generations pass by.
